  The Indonesian Gateway, with the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) as its primary water mass, serves as the key oceanic passage connecting the Pacific and Indian oceans, playing a crucial role in the global circulation pattern. Waters from the Pacific Ocean flow around Sulawesi Island along smaller seaways such as the Sulawesi Sea, Makassar Strait, Lifamatola Strait, Flores Sea and Banda Sea into the Indian Ocean. Offshore basins in Sulawesi are connected by these seaways and record key information concerning the effects of tectonic activity and deep marine sedimentation processes including turbidity and ocean bottom currents. Combined analysis of bathymetry, piston cores and seismic data reveals that sedimentation in offshore basins of Sulawesi is strongly influenced by deep- and bottom-water circulation. Three major contourite-dominated areas have been observed in this study. Contourite depositional systems in these basins have been fed by the Celebes Molasse sediments since the Neogene. Our study of the development of bottom currents on steep-slope sedimentation provides new insights into Bottom Current Reworked Sand as reservoir targets for hydrocarbon exploration and carbon storage. Geophysical bathymetric survey and piston core sampling acquisition conducted in this study reveal seabed morphology and the spatiotemporal characteristics of deep-water mixed systems in the basin to increase potential reservoir quality.

  During the Paleocene and Eocene, many Arctic basins experienced multiple, yet synchronous periods of increased sedimentation rates. Several causal factors have been suggested including major volcanic events, tectonic plate reorganization and plate break-up, as well as widespread uplift along with contemporaneous and short-lived hyperthermal events. However, the significance of and relation between tectonic and climatic forcing on Arctic sediment transfer during the early Paleogene are poorly understood. In this case study from the Barents Shelf margin in the Norwegian Arctic, we present previously unpublished cores combined with exploration wells, and new high-resolution 3D seismic data to investigate sedimentary stacking patterns and geomorphological features in the Sørvestsnaget Basin. Our integrated investigations reveal the development of climate-controlled and tectonically-driven submarine fans. The PETM fans display an individual fan as a result of single depositional event compared to the middle Eocene fans that show stacked submarine fans probably deposited during multi-phase events. Our stratigraphic forward modelling analysis indicates that regional-scale tectonically induced uplift significantly increased the amount of sand delivered to the basin as documented by a thickening of the basin fill succession. The climatic component contributes to sand transport variability to the basin, and thus the temporal evolution pattern of sand is much varied. Finally, we discuss our findings with the tectonic and climatic forcing factors in a circum-Arctic perspective.

  Canyon – channel systems have the potential to be biological and marine litter “hotspots”, and they can act as important carbon sinks. However, knowledge about the modern (Holocene) activity of many of these systems remains poor. This includes the high-latitude Andøya Canyon - Lofoten Basin Channel located in the Norwegian Sea (∼69oN). This study focuses on the proximal Lofoten Basin Channel and associated deposits (the Andøya Canyon is previously reported). The Lofoten Basin Channel includes two channel branches representing the canyon continuation beyond the foot of the continental slope, terminating in an area resembling a braidplain including braided channels, bars, as well as MTDs. Sediment cores included sandy turbidites. Based on their age and Ca/Fe ratios, we infer that the youngest sandy turbidites were deposited during the same event, suggesting that the event covered an area of c. 120 km × 20 km. Assuming an average thickness of ∼10 cm, this result in a volume of ∼0,24 km³ of terrigenous sand deposited in the basin over an area of ∼2400 km2 sometime during the period from 3.7 to 2.4 kyrs BP. This equals a sand thickness of 4.8 m in the c. 50 km long and 1 km wide thalweg part of the Andøya Canyon, here considered to be the source area. The sand could derive from failure of sandy accumulations within the canyon and/or from sand piracy. Another aspect of this Holocene turbidite event is that it represented a substantial export of inorganic carbon into the deep sea which in this way got buried, representing a carbon sink removing carbon from the carbon cycle (a carbon draw-down effect). These results shows that the canyon is a potential source and route for sediments that may cover ∼2400 km² of the sea floor, large deep-sea areas that also represent carbon sinks so far not well accounted for.

  Multiple ice age cycles spanning the last three million years have fundamentally transformed the Arctic landscape. The cadence, intensity and pattern of this glacial modification underpin the stability of Arctic geosystems over geologic time scales, including its hydrology, circulation patterns, slope stability, hydrocarbon fluid flow, geochemical/sediment cycling and nutrient supply. The Barents Shelf provides a unique arena to investigate long-term landscape evolution as it has undergone significant glacial modification during the Quaternary and has an extensive stratigraphic data repository motivated by decades of hydrocarbon seismic and well exploration. Here, we assimilate new geological datasets with ice sheet erosion modelling to incrementally reconstruct the geomorphic evolution of the Eurasian Arctic domain over each of the 47 glaciations since the intensification of Northern Hemisphere glaciation ~2.74 Ma. We utilise this time-transgressive framework to review hypotheses regarding the heterogenous development of the Barents Shelf and the timing of key topographic reconfiguration episodes. Our results demonstrate that up to 2.6 km of bedrock was glacially removed to the shelf margins, and though the mean rate of erosion declines over the Quaternary, the efficacy of glacial erosion has a more complex timeline. Initially, erosion was highly effective as large expanses of the Eurasian Arctic switched from subaerial exposure to marine conditions around 2 Ma. Thereafter, erosional efficacy decreased as the landscape desensitised to successive glaciations but, after 1 Ma, it increased as a dynamic, marine-based ice sheet drained by ice streams expanded, selectively eroding large outlet troughs to the shelf edge. Critically for Arctic climate, at ~0.69 Ma this episode of enhanced preferential erosion opened up the Barents Seaway establishing a new circulation pathway between the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. Our 4D landscape reconstruction provides key boundary conditions for paleoclimate models and establishes a new framework for assessing the profound impact of late-Cenozoic glaciation on the Eurasian Arctic landscape.

  The Norwegian Sea oceanic basins and prograded margins have developed since NE Atlantic break-up in the earliest Eocene. Significant amounts of sediments were fed to the regionally subsiding and widening Norwegian Sea during the Cenozoic as a result of several phases of uplift and erosion of the bounding shelves and their hinterland. Despite an overall passive-margin evolution, the area experienced tectonic events and associated processes that interrupted the regional subsidence, causing contraction/inversion and tilting.   The Eurasia Basin formed by continental breakup and separation of the Lomonosov Ridge from the northern Barents-Kara shelves at about 54-56 Ma. It was a restricted oceanic basin since its formation until the Miocene, when extensive water circulation between the North Atlantic and Arctic commenced through the Fram Strait gateway. The opening of the oceanic gateway had large impact on paleoceanography and paleoclimate, which evolved from an Eocene greenhouse to a Neogene icehouse associated with northern hemisphere glaciations. The Eocene to present sedimentary fill of the Eurasia Basin was mainly sourced from surrounding shelf areas in the Barents, Kara and Laptev seas, which experienced widespread Cenozoic uplift and erosion during several phases.   Source-to-sink dynamics are subjected to complex interactions between erosion, sediment transfer and deposition, particularly in an evolving tectonic and climatic setting. Here we use stratigraphic forward modelling (SFM) to predict the basin-fill architecture of a multi-source-to-sink system based on a state-of-the-art numerical approach. The modelling processes consider key source-to-sink parameters such as water discharge, sediment load and grain size to simulate various sedimentary processes and transport mechanisms reflecting the dynamic interplay between erosion in the catchment area, subsidence, deposition and filling of the basin. The Cenozoic succession along the SW Barents Shelf margin provides a key area to examine controls on source-to-sink systems along a transform margin that developed during the opening of the North Atlantic when Greenland and Eurasian plates were separated (ca. 55 Ma onwards). Moreover, the gradual cooling which culminated in major glaciations in the northern hemisphere during the Quaternary (ca. 2.7 Ma), has affected the spatio-temporal evolution of the sediment routing along the western Barents Shelf margin. This study aims to characterize the relative importance of different source areas within the source-to-sink framework through SFM. In the early Eocene, the SW Barents Shelf experienced a relatively equal sediment delivery from three principal source areas: (i) Greenland to the north, (ii) the Stappen High to the east, representing a local source terrain, and (iii) a major southern source (Fennoscandia). In the middle Eocene, our best-fit modelling scenario suggests that the northern and the local eastern sources dominated over the southern source, collectively supplying large amounts of sand into the basin as evidenced by the submarine fans in Sørvestsnaget Basin. In the Oligocene (ca. 33 Ma) and Miocene (ca. 23 Ma), significant amounts of sediments were sourced from the east due to shelf-wide uplift. Finally, this study highlights the dynamic nature and controls of sediment transfer in multi-source-to-sink systems and demonstrates the potential of SFM to unravel tectonic and climatic signals in the stratigraphic record.

  The Neogene–Quaternary development of the ∼700 km long mid-Norwegian and Lofoten–Vesterålen continental margin is reconstructed using a dense grid of 2D seismic data and exploration wellbores. Overall, widespread ocean current-controlled contourite drifts built up along the whole margin segment from the mid-Miocene onwards (c. 11 Ma, Kai Formation). The onset (c. 8.8 Ma) of a large inner shelf progradation (Molo Formation) was, however, restricted to the southern part of the study area, the inner mid-Norwegian shelf. In the Quaternary (c. 2.7 Ma), grounded ice sheets repeatedly brought large sediment volumes (Naust Formation) to the shelf beyond the Molo Formation. A similar build-out is less pronounced further north, where contourite drift growth instead continued and resulted in build-up of the Lofoten and Vesterålen drifts. In contrast, the drifts of the southern part of the study area occur for the most part stratigraphically below, interbedded with and distal to the progradational Molo and Naust deposits. The study area exemplifies pronounced variability in Neogene–Quaternary continental margin growth. The wide and gently dipping mid-Norwegian margin facilitated coastal and shelf progradation related to fluvial and glacial processes, while the narrow and steep Lofoten–Vesterålen margin received little input from these sources although exposed to the same paleoclimate. Instead, erosion of canyons promoted downslope reworking across the slope and into the deep basins. This low sediment input is interpreted to be controlled by the alpine relief in the north resulting in a small source area and thus low fluvial and glacial sediment input. To the south, hinterland relief allowed for a much larger fluvial and later, glacial source area. Both margin segments were also influenced by contour currents throughout the studied period. We emphasize their importance for understanding the role of erosion and deposition in source-to-sink systems, and thus the need for these processes to be integrated within source-to-sink models

  Unravelling past, large-scale ocean circulation patterns is crucial for deciphering the longterm global paleoclimate. Here we apply numerical modelling to reconstruct the detailed paleobathymetry-topography of the southwestern inlet of the Barents Seaway that presently connects the Atlantic and Arctic oceans. Subaerial topography was likely enough to block Atlantic Water from entering the Barents Seaway in the earliest Eocene (c. 55 Ma). The water may have entered in the middle Eocene (c. 47 Ma) as observed from major basin subsidence, but paleotopographic highs to the east may have hindered connections between the two oceans. From the Oligocene (c. 33 Ma) until the onset of the Quaternary (c. 2.7 Ma), basin shallowing and regional shelf uplift blocked Atlantic Water from entering the Barents Seaway. Our results imply that the Fram Strait remained the sole gateway for Atlantic Water into the Arctic Ocean since its opening in the Miocene until the Quaternary.

  Ice can sculpt extraordinary landscapes, yet the efficacy of, and controls governing, glacial erosion on geological timescales remain poorly understood and contended, particularly across Polar continental shields. Here, we assimilate geophysical data with modelling of the Eurasian Ice Sheet — the third largest Quaternary ice mass that spanned 49°N to 82°N — to decipher its erosional footprint during the entire last ~100 ka glacial cycle. Our results demonstrate extreme spatial and temporal heterogeneity in subglacial erosion, with rates ranging from 0 to 5 mm a−1 and a net volume equating to ~130,000 km3 of bedrock excavated to depths of ~190 m. A hierarchy of environmental controls ostensibly underpins this complex signature: lithology, topography and climate, though it is basal thermodynamics that ultimately regulates erosion, which can be variously protective, pervasive, or, highly selective. Our analysis highlights the remarkable yet fickle nature of glacial erosion — critically modulated by transient ice-sheet dynamics — with its capacity to impart a profound but piecemeal geological legacy across mid- and high latitudes

  Gas hydrate systems along the west-Svalbard margin exist in a unique polar margin setting characterized by: (1) changes in sub-seabed pressure due to glacial isostatic rebound and flexure since the onset of glaciations at 2.7 Ma; (2) rapid fluctuations in sediment delivery towards the continental slope associated with glacial dynamics; (3) bottom current variations in both temperature and position along the slope; and (4) geothermal gradient variations (80–160 °C/km) and near-surface deformation associated with ultra-slow mid-ocean ridge spreading. Along this polar margin, the base of the gas hydrate stability zone and thus the depth of the bottom simulating reflection (BSR) adapts to these changes in both pressure and temperature. However, it is the presence of a focused fluid flow system sustained by microbial, thermogenic and possibly even abiotic gas sources reaching the near-surface that determines the distribution of BSRs across the margin. Thus, gas hydrate stability, and therefore BSR dynamics in this polar margin, respond to a mixture of complex mechanisms affecting the system from the top and from the bottom. In this article we describe the structural, sedimentary and oceanographic setting, the type of gas hydrate-related BSRs and the different geological footprints (e.g., gas chimneys, pockmarks, brecciated pathways, mounds) associated with the migration of shallow gas through the gas hydrate stability zone over geological time along the west-Svalbard margin.

  Uplift and erosion are complex phenomena in terms of their governing processes, precise timing and exact magnitude. The intricate relationship between different geodynamic processes leading to uplift may increase uncertainties in estimating spatial and temporal patterns. Sediment distribution from uplifted (and eroded) topography and the corresponding paleoenvironmental reconstructions require reliable constrains. The Barents Shelf provides a unique arena to study uplift and erosion due to extensive seismic and well data attributed to high petroleum activity. This particular interest has led to a voluminous literature about this topic over the last three decades. Here, we present the current status of the Cenozoic uplift and erosion on the Norwegian Barents Shelf by reviewing the key terminology, its tectonic history and paleoenvironment, methods in quantifying uplift and erosion, as well as timing and possible mechanisms. Our new erosion maps show an increase in net erosion to the north and northeast that represents key underlying concepts, including tectonic (compression, rift-flank uplift, thermo-mechanical coupling, mantle dynamics, flexural/isostatic response) as well as magmatic and glacial processes. We have integrated pre-glacial and glacial net erosion using the mass balance method and added our results from sonic velocity, interval velocity and sandstone diagenesis methods to the new maps. This review shows that discrepancies of net erosion estimates from different methods are on the order of 500 m. Finally, we identify research gaps for future studies, with implications for the Barents Shelf and other uplifted basins worldwide

  The onset and evolution of the middle to late Cenozoic “icehouse” world was influenced by the development of the global ocean circulation linking the Norwegian–Greenland Sea-Arctic Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. The evolution of the early Neogene to early Quaternary Bjørnøyrenna Drift, located at the SW Barents Sea continental margin, shed new light on this important hydrological event. By analyzing seismic data and exploration wellbores, it is found that the drift likely started to form in the early/middle Miocene, probably as a result of an ocean circulation reorganization following the opening of the Fram Strait gateway (c. 17 Ma) and subsidence of the Greenland–Scotland Ridge (c. 12 Ma). Thus, the onset of drift growth is considered to have happened close in time to the Mid Miocene Climatic Optimum at 16–14 Ma, and was part of a regional onset of large-scale ocean circulation in the Norwegian–Greenland Sea that influenced the subsequent climate cooling. The drift continued to grow under the influence of early Quaternary glacimarine sedimentation, and later overtopping of the drift mound by downslope transfer of glacigenic sediments during full-glacial conditions resulted in a submarine failure. For the first time, minimum average sedimentation rates of a Neogene to Quaternary drift in this area is calculated, giving rates of 0.020–0.031 m/Kyr. These values are comparable to average deep-sea sedimentation rates from modern low-latitude river systems such as the Amazon and Mississippi, but lower than the Quaternary glacial sedimentation rates from the Barents Sea and Fennoscandian continental margins

  A compilation of seismic data has been used to characterize the Neogene – Quaternary sedimentary succession of the northwestern Barents Sea continental margin to better understand the paleoenvironmental evolution and the sedimentary processes involved. The Neogene strata are dominated by contourites related to the ocean circulation established from the opening of the Fram Strait connecting the Atlantic and the Arctic Oceans (< ~17.5 Ma). The upper Plio–Pleistocene strata (< ~2.7 Ma) are dominated by stacked gravity‐driven deposits forming trough‐mouth fans that were sourced from paleo‐ice streams. Within the inter‐fan areas, contouritic sedimentation prevailed. Thus, this margin provides an example of interaction of glacigenic debris flows, contour currents, and hemipelagic/glacimarine sedimentary processes. A total of ~29,000 km3 of sediments with an average sedimentation rate of about 0.24 m/Kyr were estimated. These numbers reflect the sediment input to this part of the Arctic Ocean from the northwestern Barents Sea shelf and adjacent land areas. For the first time, the average erosion and erosion rates for this source area are estimated using a mass balance approach. Approximately 410 – 650 m of erosion has on average occurred, corresponding to an average erosion rate of ~0.15 – 0.24 m/Kyr. These rates are comparable to those reported from other glaciated margins, including the western Svalbard and mid‐Norway margin, but up to only half the rates reported from the western Barents Sea margin. This variation is interpreted due to the size and bedrock types of the drainage area, ice dynamics, and the continental slope gradient.

  The Cenozoic pre-glacial development of the southwestern Barents Sea is discussed, with focus on the early to middle Cenozoic net erosion that was poorly constrained. From 2D and 3D seismic mapping, the western Barents Sea continental margin development shows a complex history of structural configuration of highs and basins related to the Greenland and Eurasian plate movement and subsequent seafloor spreading in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea. Our subdivision of the Sørvestsnaget Basin allows for a closer focus on the tectonostratigraphic development in an overall transtensional setting. To the west, the lower to middle Cenozoic sediments are observed to be systematically overlying the oceanic crust in the Lofoten Basin in accordance to the progressive seafloor's opening. Based on interpretation of five seismic units including sediment progradation (clinoforms) as well as lithology information from exploration wells, the paleoenvironments for the Paleocene, Eocene, Oligocene, and Neogene periods were reconstructed. The mass-balance approach has then been used to quantify the corresponding erosion of the southwestern Barents Sea source area. The Stappen High, the Loppa High, and part of mainland Northern Norway are proposed as the key drainage areas covering a combined area of 191,500 to 334,000 km², depending on the location of its eastern limit. Our result shows that an average net erosion of 858–1362 m and an average erosion rate of 0.014–0.021 m/k.y have characterized the Cenozoic pre-glacial period. The calculated sediment discharge is 8.7 × 10⁶ t/y and the sediment yield is 26.2–45.7 t/km²/y. Comparison with present-day fluvial systems shows a similar rate of sediment discharge suggesting that our estimates are reasonable. The pre-glacial sedimentation rate is estimated to be 0.026–0.071 m/k.y, which is on average one order of magnitude lower than for the preceding glacial period characterizing this area.

  The source-to-sink (S2S) approach is a fundamental method in sedimentary geology, offering a strong framework to understand the full journey of sediment from continental source areas to deep-sea basins. These sediment routing systems serve as invaluable records, capturing the complex interaction between external forces, such as climate, sea-level changes, tectonics, and Earth's internal surface processes. By examining the entire sediment continuum, researchers can uncover key information about landscape development, basin evolution, ancient environments, and sediment provenance. The vast and active landscapes of Asia and Oceania, shaped by mountain-building, strong monsoonal weather, and major sea-level shifts, provide an exceptional natural laboratory for deepening our grasp of these complex Earth systems. Despite its power and widespread use, the S2S approach faces ongoing challenges that can reduce its predictive accuracy and reproducibility. Significant uncertainties still exist when trying to connect different spatial and temporal scales, from grain-scale processes in a catchment to the basin-scale stratigraphic architecture built up over millions of years. Combining diverse datasets and accurately measuring the influence of various forces on the sedimentary record remains a major obstacle. These scaling, resolution, and process-related challenges can cause unquantified risks in geological models, highlighting the urgent need for a dedicated platform to gather recent advancements and promote a more reliable, quantitative, and reproducible S2S science. This session aims to address these challenges by showcasing the latest advancements in S2S research across Asia and Oceania. We welcome the submission of interdisciplinary studies that highlight recent advancements in perspectives, methods, and applications. The session will span the breadth of S2S research with contributions that utilize multi-proxy approaches including geophysical data, numerical and analogue modelling, sedimentary provenance analysis, and field observations to develop a comprehensive understanding of sediment routing systems. By promoting diverse research that links S2S dynamics to urgent global issues such as sustainable geoscience, energy transition, geohazard mitigation, and climate change, this session will not only deepen our fundamental understanding of Earth surface processes but also underscore the vital role of S2S science in addressing contemporary societal challenges.

  Landscapes preserve Earth’s history, yet much of that record is missing. Erosion removes material from the surface, while sedimentation preserves parts of that history elsewhere. The same principles shaped the world’s northernmost mountain belt, the Eurekan Orogeny. The eroded fragments have contemporaneously filled kilometre-deep oceanic basins alongside the development of Earth’s slowest seafloor spreading (Gakkel Ridge). Moreover, the opening of the Fram Strait remains debated in terms of the timing, nature, and evolution. How effectively does erosion shape the Arctic topography? What role do different sedimentary processes play in transporting and distributing Earth’s archive into the evolving oceanic basins? Here, we use coupling Badlands codes and GPlates to simulate the sedimentary source-to-sink system and basin filling during the tectonic plate separation between the Lomonosov Ridge and the northern Barents Shelf. I will present numerical modelling results as part of the framework of the BRAVO (Barents Sea Evolution) project, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellowship between the University of Sydney and the University of Oslo.

  Reconstructing Cenozoic sedimentary source-to-sink in the greater Barents Sea is highly uncertain due to heavily eroded Cenozoic strata during the Quaternary glaciations. This uncertainty led to diverging models of the Barents Shelf paleo-landscape in the Cenozoic, ultimately affecting the accuracy of climate, oceanographic and sediment source-to-sink simulations. The ratio between off-shelf Cenozoic pre-glacial and glacial sediments is relatively higher in the Barents Sea northern continental margin than the western margin. This observation and other studies point to a hypothesis of an elevated terrain of the paleo-northern Barents Sea in the Paleogene-Neogene. However, it is not clear when and how this paleo-topographic high was formed, and how it evolved throughout the Cenozoic. The spatio-temporal pattern of the catchment area supplying sediments to the evolving ultra-slow seafloor spreading of the Nansen Basin remains enigmatic. Moreover, the impact of rift-flank uplift on the sediment routing from the source to the sink area is also unclear, considering a relatively sharp boundary between the continental and oceanic plates in the study area. Here we used Badlands forward modelling coupled with GPlates tectonic reconstructions to simulate the basin-filled stratigraphy in the Nansen Basin and the landscape evolution of the northern Barents Sea. We compared the numerical outcomes with the seismic data from and across the continental margin. Our simulations shed light on constraining the opening configuration of the Nansen Basin, reflecting interactions between tectonic (deeper mantle processes, isostasy), climatic and surface processes (sediment erosion, transport and deposition).

The cadence and intensity of this glacial modification underpin the stability of Arctic geosystems over geologic time scales, including its hydrology, circulation patterns, slope stability, hydrocarbon fluid flow, geochemical/sediment cycling and nutrient supply. The Barents Shelf provides a unique arena to investigate long-term landscape evolution as it has an extensive stratigraphic data repository motivated by decades of hydrocarbon seismic and well exploration. We assimilate new geological datasets with ice sheet erosion modelling to produce a detailed reconstruction of this Eurasian Arctic domain over each of the 47 glaciations since the intensification of Northern Hemisphere glaciation ∼2.7 Ma. Our results demonstrate that up to 2.6 km of bedrock was eroded and transported to the shelf margins. Though the mean rate of erosion declines over the Quaternary, the efficacy of glacial erosion has a more complex timeline. Initially, erosion was highly effective as large expanses of the Eurasian Arctic switched from subaerial exposure to marine conditions around 2 Ma. Erosional efficacy decreased as the landscape desensitised to successive glaciations, but after 1 Ma, it increased as dynamic, marine-based ice sheets expanded, selectively eroding large outlet troughs to the shelf edge. Critically for the Arctic climate, at ∼0.69 Ma this episode of preferential erosion opened up the Barents Seaway, establishing a new circulation pathway between the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. Our 4D landscape reconstruction provides key boundary conditions for paleoclimate models and establishes a new framework for assessing the profound impact of the Quaternary glaciations on the Eurasian Arctic landscape

  Basin and landscape dynamics play a key role in oceanographic and climate evolution, such as connecting two major oceans and establishing a paleotopographic high at the onset of large-scale glaciations. The Barents Sea is an underexplored ocean gateway (also known as the Barents Seaway) connecting the Atlantic and Arctic oceans. However, unlike the Fram Strait Gateway, its formation over the past 66 Myr in the Cenozoic remains unclear. Several studies suggest that a paleo-topographic high was formed in the northern Barents Sea as early as the Miocene (c. 23 Ma), preconditioning an ice cap formation that led to the development of large-scale glaciation in the Northern Hemisphere (c. 2.7 Ma). However, the exact timing of this mountainous terrain remains uncertain. Here we used badlands, an open-source basin and landscape forward modelling framework to simulate the evolution of basin and landscape in the northern Barents Sea in the Cenozoic. To constrain the geometry of the oceanic basin for the sediment filling to the Nansen Basin we take advantage of GPlates. We then test different scenarios of catchment models and their associated sediment transport and accumulation in a source-to-sink context. Paleo-precipitations, sea-level fluctuations and tectonic/flexural response are used to understand the controlling parameters. The numerical results are then compared with seismic profiles and available well and core data. This study contributes to constraining the spatio-temporal pattern of the northern Barents Shelf landscape morphology, which can be applied in other formerly glaciated areas.

  The efficacy and controls governing glacial erosion over geological timescales are intricately linked yet remain poorly understood and contended. By assimilating geophysical data with modelling of the Eurasian Ice Sheet - the third largest Quaternary ice mass that spanned 49°N - 82°N - we decipher its erosional footprint during the last ~110 ka glacial cycle. Our results demonstrate extreme spatiotemporal heterogeneity in erosion with short-term rates ranging from 0 - 5 mm a-1 , and a net volume equating to ~130,000 km3 of bedrock excavated to depths of ~190 m. A hierarchy of environmental controls ostensibly underpins this signature: lithology, topography and climate, though it is basal thermodynamics that ultimately regulates erosion, which can be variously protective, pervasive, or, highly selective. A notable signature of this thermomechanically regulated erosional footprint is an increase in the intensity of erosion across upland areas of Fennoscandia and within troughs in the Barents Sea during the last deglaciation compared to the long-term mean. New meltwater landforms mapped from multibeam bathymetry data collected in the Central Barents Sea capture insight into the evolving nature of the subglacial environment of the Barents Sea ice sheet as it thinned and collapsed; the apparent abundance of basal meltwater, which we interpret was increasingly being supplemented by inputs from supraglacial melting, likely contributed to elevated erosion of the sedimentary substrate and the mobilisation of subglacial sediments during the latter stages of deglaciation

  The Barents Seaway represents an important marine connection between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans. However, how and when precisely the Barents Seaway formed are not very well understood being overshadowed by its neighbor, the Fram Strait Gateway. The Bravo (Barents Sea Evolution) project will address this issue and aims at reconstructing the Barents Seaway paleobathymetry in the Cenozoic. The key challenge is to quantify the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of km-scale vertical movement of Cenozoic uplift and erosion due to glaciations and pre-glacial tectonism. BRAVO approach requires a comprehensive analysis of off-shelf sediment estimation, lithospheric strength, and other mantle-related processes in order to produce a reliable model. BRAVO will use extensive seismic and well data, and utilize numerical modelling technique using pyGPlates software. BRAVO will also test the paleobathymetry reconstructions by simulating the corresponding sediment source-to-sink in the Cenozoic using pyBadlands, an open-source codes for sediment transport, erosion and depositional processes. BRAVO is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) project funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe and the Research Council of Norway (2023-2026).

  Ocean gateways connecting ocean basins are crucial for water and heat circulation, which influence global temperature, climate evolution and sediment distribution. While deep-water gateways have been a major research focus by the community, very little attention has been drawn to shallower gateways located on the continental shelves, where such circulation also takes place. In this study, we investigate the evolution of a shallow gateway in SW Barents Sea that presently connects NE Atlantic and Arctic oceans. This gateway contributes to about half of the Atlantic–Arctic water exchange, whereas the other half is occurring through the deeper Fram Strait Gateway. When and how this SW Barents Sea Gateway formed are debated and still poorly understood. Outcomes from this study will thus be relevant for regional and global models of ocean circulation. Moreover, this study will contribute to climate evolution models over longer timescale in a climate sensitive region where an Arctic amplification of warming is presently seen.

  <p>When multiple source areas are located on a continuously moving plate margin relative to a sink, the signal propagation in the source-to-sink system may vary significantly in time and space. How fast and severe the impact of tectonics and climate is on sediment erosiontransfer-deposition in this dynamic setting is still not well understood. Similarly, how do we quantify the relative sediment contribution from each source area? Here, we use a forward stratigraphic modelling technique to constrain key controlling parameters in basin filling in relation to the Cenozoic successions of the Barents Sea in the Norwegian Arctic. <p>The Cenozoic evolution of the Barents Sea shelf is strongly linked to the breakup between the Greenland and the Eurasian plates at c. 55 Ma, which led to the development of highs and basins along the margins of the Barents Sea. This configuration resulted in the deposition of progradational wedges and submarine fans (c. 40 Ma) in the Sørvestsnaget Basin. Subsequent plate reorganization caused a major shelf uplift (c. 33 Ma) and opening of the Fram Strait (c. 17 Ma) and affected the sedimentary processes and deposits in the sink (including contourites) now observable in seismic and borehole data. <p>Moreover, Cenozoic successions were deposited under different extreme climate settings ranging from the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) to icehouse conditions during the Quaternary glaciations (c. <2.7 Ma). A major increase in sediment supply resulting from glacial erosion is reflected in the deposition of a series of trough mouth fans along the continental margin. We present preliminary results of an ongoing project modelling this source-to-sink system, and discuss what factors control sediment erosion, transfer, and basin filling.

  The Eurasian ice sheet shaped the north-western European continental shelf through kilometre-scale denudation processes, sediment transfer, and related uplift during repeated glacial cycles over the Quaternary. These significant mass redistributions, as well as playing important roles in sculpting landscapes across geological timescales, also have a significant effect on subsurface hydrocarbon systems, through the tilting of reservoirs, shifting of migration routes, and the reduction of seal strength. However, constraints regarding the efficacy and controls on glacial erosion are poorly known, in particular for polar ice sheets over timescales of 100,000 years and more. We assimilate geological data with ice sheet modelling to investigate the time-transgressive erosional patterns during the last ~110 ka glacial cycle beneath the Eurasian ice sheet. Our results demonstrate extreme rates and a complex spatial variability of glacial erosion ranging from 0 to >5 mm per year across contrasting topographic settings and geological provinces. Bedrock lithologies and thermomechanical boundary conditions are key factors determining long-term erosion rates, particularly across high-elevation plateaus during deglaciation phases. Maximum suspended sediment fluxes peaked during the Bølling-Allerød warming c. 15 ka, up to an order-of-magnitude greater than contemporary rates from the Greenland ice sheet. The downstream impact in marine ecosystems was substantial, increasing the far-field supply of bioavailable micronutrients to promote phytoplankton blooms and thus yielding a major carbon sink. The highly selective subglacial erosion across shield margins, along with episodes of extreme rates driven by abrupt disequilibrium within the climate-cryosphere-landscape system, provide essential context to contemporary process studies that evidence exceptionally high rates of erosion as ice sheets respond to increased meltwater flux and deglaciate under abrupt climate warming

  The Miocene evolution of the northern part of the Mid-Norwegian margin is studied using a dense grid of 2D seismic data together with results from exploration wells on the Vøring margin. The earliest Cenozoic evolution involves rifting, opening and seafloor spreading in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea, which created accommodation space in a marine to shallow-marine setting on this margin. Low to moderate amplitude parallel-layered reflections in the Miocene Kai Formation is interpreted to represent deep-water hemipelagic deposition in the Vøring Basin. Although the Norwegian-Greenland Sea deepened and widened as seafloor spreading evolved, the Mid-Norwegian margin experienced compressional forces during the Cenozoic. This caused doming along the Norwegian-Greenland Sea basin margin, which largely affected the depositional pattern of the Kai Formation. Very thin deposits characterize the dome crests, whereas thicker accumulations fill in the basins between the domes. These accumulations typically have elongated shapes oriented in a SSW-NNE direction. The largest accumulation is present on the slope and is ~200 km long, between 40 and 110 km wide and up to ~520 m thick. A pronounced divergent reflection configuration with associated moat structures characterize these elongated accumulations. Progressive onlap are typical for their upslope reflection terminations, while low-angle downlap often characterize the downslope terminations. These characteristics are altogether typical of contourites deposited from ocean currents, indicating the presence of a well-established oceanic circulation with a persistent current direction along the Norwegian margin during deposition of the Kai Formation. Eastwards of the Kai Formation, steeply dipping clinoforms of the Molo Formation testify to a coastal outbuilding. An internal chaotic seismic facies on the lower slope suggest that parts of the Molo Formation has failed.

  The Cenozoic strata of the Vesterålen continental margin are studied using multi-channel 2D seismic data. The study area encompasses the Loften and Harstad basins and lies along a particularly steep and narrow segment of the Norwegian margin. The early Cenozoic evolution of the margin comprised rifting and opening of the Norwegian-Greenland Sea, which created accommodation space on the continental slope and in the newly formed ocean basin. In the earliest Eocene, igneous processes dominated in the eastern part of the basin, resulting in the deposition of lavas, tuffs and possibly some intrusions, observed as discontinuous high-amplitude seismic reflections. In the early Eocene to mid-Miocene strata, a chaotic seismic facies on the slope indicates mass wasting activity, while parallel-layered continuous reflections in the basin indicate hemipelagic deposition and/or turbidity currents (unit A). Parts of the basin succession show a mounded onlapping relationship to the underlying sediments, characteristic of contourites. This might suggest that restricted oceanic circulation began in the newly formed basin during the early Cenozoic. Contourite development shifted onto the slope later in the period. From mid-Miocene, widespread contourite build-up, both on the slope and in the basin, indicate intensified oceanic circulation (unit B). This is likely a result of the opening of the Fram Strait and subsidence of the Greenland-Scotland Ridge, allowing for a fully ventilated Norwegian-Green-land Sea, i.e. with connections to the North Atlantic in the south and the Arctic Ocean in the north. Focused mass transport activity to the basin indicates that canyons on the slope developed shortly after the mid-Miocene. During the Quaternary, glaciers traversed the shelf forming glacial troughs. Material eroded from ice streams in these troughs was delivered directly into the canyons, which efficiently transported sediments into the basin where they accumulated as submarine fans at the canyon outlets. The slope, thereby acted as a sediment bypass zone. Contourites continued to develop on the slope and in the basin throughout the Quaternary (unit C).

  Present-day warming is most pronounced at high latitudes, raising concern for the stability of modern ice caps such as the ones overlying the Svalbard archipelago. Palaeo-records give us opportunity to understand past behavior of these systems, including the ice retreat from the continental shelf at the end of the last glaciation. In order to evaluate and reconstruct this in a robust way, it is essential that we acquire high-quality data sets covering key areas in the Arctic. New multi-beam bathymetric data was acquired in July 2019 from the Woodfjorden Trough; an up to 60 km long and 40 km wide transverse trough on the northwestern part of the Svalbard continental shelf. Previous investigations have shown that this trough was occupied by a major ice stream draining the Svalbard Ice Sheet during the last glacial, but the deglacial dynamics of this sector of the Svalbard Ice Sheet are presently not well constrained. The new data reveal a complex seabed morphology including larger (2 km wide, 50 m high) and smaller (100 m wide, 3 m high) ridges, as well as sediment wedges (1 to 2 km wide, 30 m high), partly showing crosscutting relationships. These ridges and wedges are discontinuous in the outer part of the trough, where they are partly superposed by glacial lineations and small- to larger sized iceberg ploughmarks (up to 1500 m wide and 30 m deep). In the middle part of the trough, more continuous ridges dominate. The ridges and wedges are interpreted to be glacial landforms formed by grounded ice within the Woodfjorden Trough. Their crosscutting relationships testify to a complex deglaciation, including several advances and still stands of the ice front during overall ice retreat, and their size could indicate that the glacier front was stable for some time. Smaller ridges may be retreat moraines formed during shorter (annual?) still stands of the glacier front. Based on their discontinuous characteristics, the ridges and wedges in the outer part of the trough may pre-date the final Late Weichselian deglaciation, i.e. they may have been overridden by a grounded glacier. The more continuous character of the ridges in the middle part of the trough indicate that these likely date from the Late Weichselian deglaciation. The glacial landforms identified here are rather atypical for glacial troughs, commonly dominated by mega-scale glacial lineations superposed by one or a few grounding zone wedges and/or smaller retreat moraines. The abundant morainal systems and glacial lineations of the Woodfjorden Trough, instead, testify to highly dynamic grounded ice occupying the trough, and a retreat which was characterized by several periods of ice margin stability, interrupted by readvances. This fits with recent studies from onshore areas, showing that the deglaciation of northern Svalbard was at least partly characterized by glacial readvances during the overall ice retreat.

  The circum North Atlantic-Arctic continental margin and adjacent land areas have experienced several episodes of uplift and erosion during the Cenozoic. A series of efforts quantifying this erosion for the Barents Sea shelf, where the Arctic shelf is at its widest and deepest have been done since the early 90’s using different methods. As the seismic and well database have expanded considerably, our understanding of the Cenozoic evolution of this climatic sensitive and hydrocarbon prospective area has improved. This review includes a comparison of results from different methods (e.g. the mass balance technique,shale compaction, apatite fission track, sandstone diagenesis, and seismic velocities). The Cenozoic erosion is divided into a pre-glacial and a glacial erosion. The pre-glacial erosion is related to the early Cenozoic tectonics and riftflank uplift due to the onset of rifting, shear, and compression followed by sea-floor spreading between Norway and Greenland, whereas the glacial erosion occurred during the late Cenozoic Northern Hemisphere Glaciations when grounded ice sheets repeatedly covered the Barents Sea shelf. The different methods generally show the same order of magnitude of erosion for the major source areas in the Barents Sea, i.e. northern Norway, the Loppa High, the Stappen High, Svalbard, and from the northern Barents Sea margin. Furthermore, we compare sediment load and size of drainage area from various settings and different periods. For similar size of drainage area, sediment load for glacial period is generally higher than for the pre-glacial one. Our review shows that the ratio between the Cenozoic pre-glacial and glacial sedimentation along this part of the Arctic margin is ~40%, ~50%, and ~70% for the southwestern, northwestern, and the northern Barents Sea, respectively. Thus, there is a N-S trend of increasing pre-glacial erosion of the Barents Sea shelf, whereas an W-E trend of increasing erosion is inferred for the glacial period. Future directions of research in refining the erosion estimates and better understanding the mechanisms of uplift and erosion will be addressed.

  <p>The geologic history of the SW Eurasian Basin and the northern Svalbard/Barents Sea continental margin started in Late Cretaceous / early Tertiary. Since about 50 Ma seafloor spreading has been active in the Eurasian Basin splitting off the Lomonosov Ridge from the northern Eurasian Shelf. Since Miocene, rifting and seafloor spreading have been also established in between NE Greenland and Svalbard, separating the Moris Jesup Rise and Yermak submarine plateaus and opening the Fram Strait deep-water gateway between the Arctic and North Atlantic oceans. <p>The subsequent opening of the Eurasia Basin and the Fram Strait associated with the subsidence of the Yermak Plateau led to the formation of accumulation space along the northern Svalbard / Barents Sea continental margin. The Cenozoic sedimentary successions document the early passive margin formation within an enclosed Arctic Ocean Basin, the increasing influence of current-related deposition following the opening of the Fram Strait, and finally the strong imprint of the Quaternary glaciations of the Barents Sea. Beside ocean current activity also mass wasting plays a major role in shaping the continental margin. <p>During the last decades, several seismic campaigns were carried out along the northern Svalbard / Barents Sea continental margin. Unfortunately, lithological and age information from deep drilling is still very sparse in the study area. In this contribution we will review existing data and discuss implications for the evolution of the northern Barents Sea continental margin.

  <p>The Cenozoic development of the western Barents Sea continental margin is strongly related to the rifting and seafloor spreading between Norway and Greenland. The margin is characterized by a series of highs and basins that formed as part of the development of a mega-transform zone. To the north, the Spitsbergen Fold and Thrust Belt and the Eocene clinoform development in the Central Basin that were initiated in the Paleocene Early Eocene are the evident of compression / transpression, and sediment erosion, transport and deposition respectively. At that time, the Vestbakken Volcanic Province and the Sørvestsnaget Basin to the south experienced a period of subsidence. A marginal high and an intra- basinal high in the Sørvestsnaget Basin, as well as the Senja Ridge and the Veslemøy High are identified as positive bathymetric features that acted as local source areas. Seismic data also shows a set of Eocene clinoform in the eastern part of the Sørvestsnaget Basin that probably was sourced from the Stappen High area. Available well data show an overall deep-water paleoenvironment during the Paleocene-Eocene in the south western Barents Sea, probably shallowing north of Bjørnøya. <p>During the Oligocene, a period of plate reorganization occurred that resulted in the onset of extension also in the north western Barents Sea including sea floor spreading west of Svalbard. Here, the Forlandsundet and Bellsund grabens as well as most of the extensional faults show a significant growth. In the southwestern Barents Sea, traces of compression structures are seen on seismic data suggesting a period of tectonic inversion. An overall shallow marine paleoenvironment characterized the south western Barents Sea shelf during the Oligocene being deeper towards the west. Seismic data shows contourite development in the continentalslope areacontemporaneouswiththeopeningoftheFramStrait that connected the oceanic circulation of the Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. <p>Seismic mapping of the Paleogene-Neogene strata shows an eastward and northward increasing uplift trend in the western Barents Sea that was amplified in the late Cenozoic due to glacio-isostatic subsidence and uplift due to sediment loading/unloading process. This study suggests also a period of pre glacial’s subsidence and uplift during the Eocene due to the rifting and sea floor spreading between Norway and Greenland. A local secondary uplift in the Oligocene with lesser magnitude is also identified. Erosion estimates for the western margin is calculated to be 900-1400 m in the southwestern and probably more than 2000 m in the north western BarentsSea. The sedimentation rates and erosion rates for the Cenozoic preglacial period shows values one order of magnitude lower than during the Late Cenozoic.

  <p>The offshore deep-sea stratigraphy provides the archive for reconstructing the paleoenvironment of the surrounding land and continental shelf areas. Mapping of seismic reflections as well as borehole correlation may identify the processes and timing of basin infilling. Regional and local tectonic events will be linked to other controlling factors in defining the structural configuration in order to identify the relative source-to-sink system for each time interval. <p>Mass-balance (or source-to-sink) studies have been applied to quantify the erosion in the catchment area by examining the amount of depositional products in the basin area. Sedimentation and denudation rates are important parameters in this approach reflecting the interplay between sedimentation processes, bedrock composition, tectonic dynamics and climate. Moreover, the ratio between drainage areas against sediment load estimates can be compared with ratios for modern systems as a control (i.e. for fluvial and paleo-fluvial systems). <p>This approach has been implemented for glaciated or non-glaciated margins, passive or active settings, and for short-term or long-term systems. In the petroleum industry, denudation estimates are used as an input to calculate maximum burial depth and for predicting hydrocarbon maturation. For the high-latitude margins, this method shows that paleo-ice streams were the most prominent agents in eroding the continental shelf forming the cross-shelf troughs and the Trough Mouth Fan at their front. Mass-balance studies will ultimately contribute to more detailed paleoclimatic reconstruction to better understand the Quaternary glacial history. <p>Here we present the mass-balance approach and its application in various geological settings. We will highlight some results from the Norwegian margin as well as example from field studies. A series of assumptions and challenges when using this method will be further discussed.

  <p>The northwestern Barents Sea continental margin is a structurally complex area characterized by a series of basins and highs. It’s Cenozoic development was influenced by: 1) the formation of the Spitsbergen fold-andthrust belt towards the north and a pull-apart basin, the Vestbakken Volcanic Province, to the south, and 2) the subsequent rifting and opening of the Fram Strait, the deep-water gateway connecting the Norwegian – Greenland Sea and the Arctic Ocean. From this, the northwestern Barents Sea margin is suggested to have experienced a complex tectonic evolution during the Cenozoic, including compression/transpression and extension/transtension. The study area forms a part of a broad transform zone to the west of Svalbard that was initiated during the rifting and seafloor opening between Norway and Greenland in the Paleocene-Early Eocene. <p>Newly available 2D seismic data and magnetic data were used to better understand the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the northwestern Barents Sea margin. The seismic data shows a pronounced sequence of Paleogene - Neogene, pre-glacial sediments within the basins overlying the oceanic crust west of the transform zone. To the east, the Svalbard platform and the Stappen High includes very little Cenozoic deposits implying that these areas were subjected to erosion and probably acted as the main sediment source area for the northwestern Barents Sea margin. Updated paleoenvironment maps for this area throughout the Early - Middle Cenozoic will be reconstructed and discussed. <p>A number of studies have addressed the uplift and erosion processes during the Cenozoic for the southwestern Barents Sea margin. However, very limited work have been presented from the northwestern Barents Sea, thus the processes of erosion, erosion estimates, and their inferred source area are still poorly understood. Therefore, we also aim to estimate the erosion and erosion rates for the Paleogene – Neogene strata and compare them to other parts of the Norwegian – Barents Sea – Svalbard margin and relevant modern systems.

  The Barents Sea shelf has been experienced extensive uplift and erosion in the Cenozoic. However, the pre-glacial erosion has been so far less constrained in comparison to the glacial erosion. This paper aims to better understand the early–middle Cenozoic erosion in the western Barents Sea and the late Cenozoic erosion in the northern Barents Sea by using the mass-balance approach. The study utilizes seismic and well data to map the Cenozoic sediments and to estimate their volumes. The paleoenvironmental reconstruction is used to delineate the size of the likely source areas. From this, the average erosion and erosion rates are estimated. It is important to quantify the erosion as an effort to lower the risk in petroleum exploration in the Barents Sea. This study is also essential to understand the sedimentation pattern and their relation to the tectonic development. The paper suggests an N-S trending of uplift and erosion in the early–middle Cenozoic and E-W trending of uplift and erosion in the late Cenozoic. For the first time, the glacial erosion is estimated in the northeastern Svalbard/northern Barents Sea continental margin, which reflects the sediment input to the Arctic Ocean. The average erosion rates show one order of magnitude lower than the glacial erosion rates. The estimated numbers from this thesis are compared to the other high-latitude margins and in agreement with present-day systems.

  High resolution 3D seismic dataset has been used to examine gravity-driven deposits from the Plesitocene to present-day in the structurally complex area of the western Nile deepwater. The underlying Messinian salt and its associated faults and the existence of fluid-migrated features generated local seabed topography that affected sedimentation and seismic facies distribution. Seismic interpretation combined with planform analysis of attribute maps were utilized to define five seismic facies which are distinguished by amplitude strength, reflections, and geometry. The observation of the temporal and spatial relationship of five seismic units using isochron map analysis offers an insight into seismic stratigraphy development which can be described in three main phases. The first phase is characterized by the deposition of two main mass transport deposits (seismic unit 1 and 2). The second phase is defined by the development of channelized-fan deposit (seismic unit 3). The final phase is characterized by the deposition of near-seabed MTD and present-day channel-levee system (seismic unit 4) and the development of major mud diapirs (seismic unit 5). Spectrally decomposed and colour-blended seismic volume analysis combined with seismic facies interpretation in seismic cross-section have been useful to morphologically investigate and quantify three submarine channels and their associated elements (e.g. thalweg and erosional depth longitudinal profile, levee width and thickness). The results revealed an architectural element variation and the channel pathways with respect to local seabed topography. Increases in sinuosity are related to decreases in channel axis gradient and followed by evidence of channel aggradation Levee thickness development shows an overall decrease in thickness and width downslope with local variations due to structural bathymetry changes (e.g thickness increase towards the hanging wall of the main fault). Overall a change downslope from degradational to aggradational following equilibrium profile is observed. This is evidenced by a deeply incised channel erosional depth in the upperslope and increasing in sinuosity in the lower slope. Sinuous form is observed when the channel experiences a shallow gradient and availability of accommodation space followed by the development of lateral accretion packages (LAPs). Local structural growth (e.g. minibasin and anticline) has a big influence on the channel path geometry. Submarine channel deposit is often a prominent reservoir target in many deepwater explorations around the world. A near-seafloor study with a higher seismic resolution may give an analogue to image turbiditic reservoir architecture. Therefore, this study improves the understanding in the interaction of sedimentation and structural variations which can be applied to hydrocarbon exploration to predict control and distribution of deepwater turbiditic reservoirs.
