2019 Activities

In 2019 HOTMUD organised marine and field campaigns with a "Training-Through-Research" approach. A substantial part of the time was dedicated to training and education of new student generations maintaining in parallel the commitment to focus on purely scientific research goals.

Lake Baikal Offshore Expedition

Several regions of Lake Baikal were investigated during the TTR-BL19 expedition. The selected survey areas included mud volcanoes, gas hydrate deposits, submarine slides, hydrate bearing and degassing tectonic structures, deep sea canyons and, oil seepages. Nearly 30 people took part to this marine expedition, including scientific senior staff, students and ship’s crew from five different countries and institutes. 

Azerbaijan Summer School

The Azerbaijan Field Workshop on "Mud volcanism and Petroleum System" took place between the 12-16 September in Baku, Azerbaijan. The event was organized in cooperation with the HOTMUD partners of the Moscow State University and the Oil & Gas Institute (Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences). The School was open for undergraduate students, PhD and scientists/specialists interested to learn more in the topic of sedimentary volcanism and related petroleum systems. More than 40 participants coming from 13 different Institutes and 10 different countries attended the course.

MARESEDU 2019 Conference

As a continuation of the didactic and scientific activities of the Class@Baikal-2019, a special session is dedicated at the MARESEDU-2019 conference to the presentation of the expedition results including 2 posters and 7 oral talks prepared by the students joining the expedition.
