The BeyondCloudLab project is comprised of an international team of researchers from ETH Zurich, the Paul Scherrer Institute (Villigen) and the University of Oslo that will leverage weather modification techniques to enhance our understanding of aerosol-cloud-radiation interactions, ice crystal growth, precipitation initiation and cloud seeding.

The UiO team will be responsible for conducting broadband and spectrally resolved measurements of cloud radiative properties and assist with flying a tethered balloon platform. During 3 winter campaigns between 2025 and 2028, we will use the collected data to investigate the impact of aerosol perturbations on cloud radiative properties in a natural laboratory setting.

Overall, the BeyondCloudLab team will include four Doctoral Research Fellows/PhD students and two Postdoctoral Fellows in addition to the project leads.

Funding

The BeyondCloudLab research project is funded as a collaborating Schweizerischer Nationalfonds/SNF project (grant number 10.004.278), bringing together a team of researchers from ETH Zurich, The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI, Villigen), and the Department of Geosciences at University of Oslo.

The duration of the project is from September 2025 until August 2029.

Collaborators

The BeyondCloudLab initiative and project is the next phase of CloudLab, a project by ETH Zurich's Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science, which conducts research on microphysical processes using stratus clouds as a natural laboratory.
