ALLALIN
Event description
On August 30, 1965, an ice avalanche of 2 Mio m3
broke off at the terminus of Allalin Glacier and fall
down a rock slope towards the Mattmark dam costruction site. During this unexpected catastrophic event 88 people were killed.

Remarks
In view of a possible repetition of a catastrophic
event, a monitoring program to observe the behaviour of Allalin
Glacier was initiated. Later in the 1990s a automatic
camera was installed.
