Event description

 

A combined ice-/ snow avalanche with a volume of 13 Mio m³ broke off the east side of Weisshorn on Dezember 27, 1819. The produced air-pressure destroyed 113 houses and claimed 2 casualties.The damage occured reached 20`000 SFR.

Remarks

 

From the steep NE - side of Weisshorn repeated ice avalanches were observed. A threat for Randa only exist in winter when combined ice / snow avalanche are possible.
