BODMER

Event description

Heavy precipitation on September 24, 1994, caused the erosion of a roughly 10 to 20 m deep breach within thick and steeply inclined historical moraines in forefield of Bodmer glacier. The corresponding debris flow event in the meltwater stream consisted of numerous pulses and destroyed the cantonal bridge and road at the nearby village of Simplon Dorf. The debris entering the torrent in the main valley caused further damage in the settlement of Gabi, a few kilometers to the south and on the main Simplon highway. Evacuations of people were necessary at Gabi.
