Event description

 

The ice avalanche took place on January 10, 1962. The starting volume was estimated at 10 Mio m3. The avalanche travelled down 16 km and destroied the city of Ranrahirca, where 4`000 people died. The overall volume was 13 Mio m3.

That event prompted a prediction that an avalanche even larger than the 1962 could fall from the face and threaten Yungay.
