WP 1: Field experiments and data handling

Objective: To collect detailed, high-quality observations related to adverse weather, for assimilation into models and validation of model output.

  • 1.1 Participation in the measurement campaign in 2007 - Greenland Flow Distortion
The purpose of GFDex is to investigate the influence of Greenland on flows at various spatial scales, e.g., barrier winds, tip jets, meso-cyclones and synoptic-scale cyclones.
  • 1.2 Main measurement campaign in February-March 2008
The observational campaign February-March 2008 aims at addressing scientific questions listed in the proposal with testing of hypotheses for formation and persistence of arctic fronts, polar lows and mesoscale structures caused by terrain.
  • 1.3 Instrumentation

Synoptic instrumentation: In order to have better synoptic control and increased data-assimilation possibilities during the field phase, we plan to increase the frequency of vertical soundings.

  • 1.5 Operational procedure

The operation centre will be located at Andøya Rocket Range (Andenes, Andøya 69°N, 16°E), where scientists will have access to high-speed Internet connections and radiolinks.

  • WP 1 - Summary

The main activity in WP1 is the Norwegian-led field campaign in the Barents Sea during the winter 2008 (February-March).
