PEIOFF-FAME (completed)

The project studies the effects of drill cuttings disposal on the benthic communities in the vicinity of petroleum platforms and, through experiments, separate which effects are due to toxic substances, burial, oxygen deficiency, and changes in sediment grain size.

The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) is responsible for the NRC-project “Parameterisation of the Environmental Impacts on Bottom Fauna of Water-based Drilling Fluids and Cuttings – Field and Mesocosm Experiments”. In an effort explore the possibilities of using benthic foraminifera in environmental monitoring, benthic foraminiferal analyses have been included in the experimental approach.  Within this project, possible effects that water-based drill cuttings vs physical burial may have on benthic foraminifera are being addressed.
