VICCO+ seminar: Carbonates in volcanic ash: From Earth's past to climate's future?

Welcome to the VICCO+ seminar on Thursday 11th of December @ 14:15 in Aud. 1 in the Geology Building. The seminar is held by Jack Longman (Assistant Professor, Northumbria University, Newcastle).

The VICCO talk is held by: Jack Longman (Assistant Professor, Northumbria University, Newcastle), and has this title/topic:

Carbonates in volcanic ash: From Earth's past to climate's future?

Abstract:

Authigenic carbonate minerals form in volcanic ash through water-rock interactions when reactive glass and primary minerals weather in CO₂-bearing fluids. Fresh volcanic ash releases calcium and magnesium into alkaline pore waters, which then precipitate as calcite, aragonite, or Mg-carbonates depending on environmental conditions. This natural carbonation process occurs over timescales from decades to millennia and may represent a significant CO₂ sink in the natural world.

Understanding these mechanisms has implications for both paleoclimate studies and engineered carbon capture strategies using volcanic materials. In this talk I will give examples of this process in the geological record, discuss some ongoing work into understanding the processes and consider the potential augmentation of this process for augmented carbon drawdown.
