Evolution of the mantle source mineralogy during the NE Atlantic breakupy
Abstract:
International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 396 sampled the continent-ocean transition of the Mid-Norwegian Margin, an area that produced extensive magmatism during the last break-up phase of Pangea. We developed a new model using first-row transition element ratios of the basalts to determine the evolution of the mineralogy of the source during rifting. Our results show that the peak of magmatism coincides with a more fertile source, enriched in clinopyroxene and garnet. We interpret this enrichment as a result of the remobilization of the underplated material and the metasomatic veins formed during the initiation of the rifting.

Sarah Lambart is an igneous petrologist. She used a combination of high pressure - high temperature experiments, geochemical analyses and thermodynamic modeling to study magma genesis and transport processes. She obtained her PhD at the Magmas and Volcanoes Laboratory in Clermont-Ferrand in 2010. She then did several postdocs in the US (Caltech, Columbia University, UC Davis) and a last one at Cardiff University in Wales in 2017. Since 2018, she is a faculty at the University of Utah. Last summer, she got tenure and was promoted to Associate Professor.
