Biogeochemical modelling of the consequences of the Siberian traps gas emissions
Abstract:
The Siberian Traps emplacement 251.95 million years ago and the end-Permian mass extinction were synchronized. Here we present results from model simulations of the Siberian Traps volcanic degassing for which we recreated as realistically as possible the effusive degassing as well as the contact metamorphism degassing from the emplacement of sills in the Tunguska basin.
The environmental consequences of the reconstructed emissions sequences were simulated using the biogeochemical model GEOCLIM. We investigate the short- and long-term processes related to volatile emissions on ocean temperature and pH, as well as the disruptions in the carbon, oxygen, phosphorus, and alkalinity cycles, and we show that metamorphism plays a key role to observe any significant environmental changes.
BIO:
Antonin Pierron is a third year PhD student at the Université Paris Cité in the paleomagnetism team at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP) under the supervision of Frédéric Fluteau and Guillaume Le Hir working on the project “Linking the mass extinction and the volcanism from traps with numerical simulation”. He has two master’s degrees in physics from Sorbonne Université, one in astrophysics specialized in celestial mechanics, and one in in plasma physics with a focus on the localization of the γ-ray and optical emissions of parsec-scale jets in active galactic nuclei using Gaia DR3 and the VLBA data.
