VICCO+ seminar: Seismic Pumping, Abyssal Weathering and Carbonation of Peridotite along a slow Spreading Ridge

Welcome to the VICCO+ seminar on Thursday 4th of June @ 14:15 in Aud. 2 in the Geology Building. The seminar is held by Håkon Austrheim, Professor Em. at University of Oslo.

The VICCO talk is held by: Håkon Austrheim (Professor Emeritus, Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo), and has this title/topic:

Seismic Pumping, Abyssal Weathering and Carbonation of Peridotite along a slow Spreading Ridge

Abstract: Slow spreading ridges are associated with large bodies of weathered (brownstone facies) peridotite. A seismically processed peridotite has high porosity and minerals that are strongly out of equilibrium in contact with cold oxygen rich water. It is argued that this internal brownstone facies weathering, enhanced by seismic pumping, represents a globally significant, yet overlooked, geochemical reactor that impacts the Mg, Ca and C cycles.
