Installation of Oracle client
In order to access an Oracle database from a Windows machine, an Oracle client needs to be installed.
The computer's IP address has to be approved by oracle-drift@usit.uio.no to be able to connect.
Installing the client:
- Make sure you uninstall all previous versions of Oracle. Remove all folders remaining (C:\app, C:\oracle, C:\Program Files\Oracle), and remove any existing ORACLE_HOME environment variables.
- Start Software Center and install Oracle Client 19 (x64).
- After the installation is finished, create this file: C:\app\Oracle\products\19.3.0\client_1\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
GEOPRD.UIO.NO =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = dbora-prod04.uio.no)(PORT = 1593))
)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = GEOPRD.UIO.NO)
)
)
Test the connection with a tnsping at the command prompt:
C:\>tnsping geoprd.uio.no TNS Ping Utility for 64-bit Windows: Version 19.0.0.0.0 - Production on 11-AUG-2023 14:40:36 Copyright (c) 1997, 2019, Oracle. All rights reserved.
