We offer a Master's thesis in the interpretation of 3D seismic reflection data along the Galician segment of the Iberian hyperextended margin.
This work aims to map potential Variscan thrusts in basement rocks cut by low-angle extensional detachments along the Iberian hyperextended margin. The project will focus on investigating the influence of these thrusts in controlling subsequent rift-related extensional structures (e.g. Lymer et al., 2019). The student will use 3D seismic reflection data from the British Geological Survey.
Through this thesis, the student will gain critical skills in structural interpretation of 3D seismic reflection data using Petrel, scientific writing, assessment and discussion of scientific uncertainty, ethics in science, communication techniques to present and disseminate scientific results, a professional network of international experts in various fields of geoscience, and participation in international research projects (ArcTec, OrBiT).
The work will involve collaboration with Dr Gaël Lymer (Institute of Natural Sciences, Belgium).
The proposed work can prepare for a career in the energy industry (hydrogen, carbon capture and storage, hydrocarbons and offshore mining), governmental surveys (e.g. NGU, SoDir) and academia. The career path of the selected student will be discussed prior to the start of the project and the project objectives and activities will be adapted to the student's needs.
