Paleoecology in the Braksøya Formation, Silurian, Oslo Region

The Braksøya Formation is a highly fossil-rich limestone that has been interpreted as fossil "patch" reefs. Good locations can be found, among others, in Ringerike and near Skien. There have been some taxonomic studies, particularly on corals in this formation, as well as sedimentological studies, but so far no ecological studies have addressed the fauna as a whole.

The project will consist of detailed data collection and mapping in the field, photography, preparation, and identification, as well as statistical analysis regarding species composition and biodiversity. Is it possible to identify ecological zones within each structure (inter-reef, reef front, reef top, lagoon)?

How are these related to depth, light, and energy? Can successions be identified, i.e., consistent sequences of colonization? Are there larger-scale trends (Ringerike-Porsgrunn)?

The project is suitable for a biology or geology student with an interest in marine biology, ecology, or paleontology.
