Carbonates are known from a suite of mafic igneous rocks called lamprophyres. These melts originated from the mantle and are usually enriched in potassium. Since they contain carbonates and were enriched in CO2, the magmas acted as carriers for mantle CO2 to reach the shallow crust and the atmosphere. The carbonates occur as globules called ocelli - and are known from several dykes and sills in the Oslo Rift. However, they have not been studied by modern methods and therefore represent an interesting target for a master project.
The plan is to do fieldwork, detailed petrographic and petrological characterization, including microprobe analyses, trace elements and isotopes.
The aim is to understand the formation of the carbonates and the transport of CO2 from the mantle and to the atmosphere.
