The Drammen Granite is a composite pluton probably associated with the ignimbrite deposits of the Drammen caldera. A recent study has documented the surface ignimbrite deposits of the caldera, but no recent studies of the potential plutonic roots of the Drammen Granite have been undertaken, so the relationship between the granite and the caldera volcanic remains speculative. Furthermore, the association of phases in the Drammen Granite is poorly constrained, particularly in terms of emplacement chronology and whether or not the phases are co-magmatic.
In this thesis, the student will map different phases of the Drammen Granite and their contact relationships, characterise these phases geochemically and constrain their emplacement chronology using high-precision zircon U-Pb CA-ID-TIMS analyses.
There will also be an opportunity to perform detailed zircon Hf isotope analyses to better constrain the sources of the magmas and their evolution.
