Glacier mass loss has twofold effects on meltwater runoff: on one hand, with increased warming, meltwater production will intensify but on the other hand, glacier area reduction will reduce the meltwater yield in a catchment.
The project will evaluate the impact of climate change on glacier mass balance, volume and runoff, based on existing model set ups for Longyearbreen. Results for the historic period can be compared to available/own measurements of glacier mass balance and discharge.
Potential field visits will be conducted in collaboration with The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS).
