During a glacier surge a glacier accelerates over a few months or years, often reaching velocities several orders higher than normal representing a potential hazard. Since ice is transported faster and further downstream during a surge, such events can affect how much mass a glacier is losing and thus effect its longer-term fate.
There is a gap in understanding how surges alter the mass balance during and after surge events, as well as the long-term implications for glacier evolution.
The goal of this research is to investigate glacier surges and quantify the effect of a glacier surge on glacier mass change and evolution. Depending on interest, this research can rely either on remote sensing, numerical modelling or both.
