A short summary of Sustainable AI in an era of agents

The presentation is given by Erik Johannes Husom at SINTEF Digital.

The carbon footprint of AI has been on the agenda since foundational AI models appeared in the late 2010s, at first because of the large amounts of energy needed to train them, and later because explosive growth in deployment drove the overall energy usage to new heights. Recent advancements in using Large Language Models (LLMs) as "agents", often referred to as "agentic AI", have spurred another acceleration of AI's resource consumption. This talk will look at how the field of Green AI tries to tackle AI's environmental issues, what the most pertinent challenges are, and how we can approach this technology from a perspective of sustainability.
