Digital organizing concerns how business is formally and informally organized through the development, implementation and use of digital technology. Digital technologies, AI, IoT, data analytics, digital platforms, and ecosystems enable and challenge organizing across existing processes, businesses, industries, and sectors. Organizations are undergoing major digital transformation processes due to the importance of digital technologies. Digital organizing reshapes existing business models, drives collaboration, and requires new modes of value creation, value delivery, and value capture. Internal management within organizations occurs in parallel with the orchestration of ecosystems across diverse public and private actors. Consequently, the strategy of each individual organization is complemented by dynamic strategizing at the ecosystem level. Moreover, an increased focus is required on all three sustainability dimensions: social, economic, and environmental/climate.
DIO studies the intersection of digitalization and organizing—both within and between organizations, from small practices to large ecosystems. Our research is multidisciplinary and draws on theory and empirical insights from information systems (IS), organization studies, and strategy. We collaborate with organizations locally, nationally, and globally on all levels of the organization from daily practices and engineering work to strategizing for a whole sector. We investigate topics such as cross-organizational orchestration, digital platform services for sustainability, servitization and digital transformation, new business-models, and ecosystem strategizing.
