Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is the protection of digital assets from harm. More specifically, cybersecurity consists of preventing and stopping cyber attacks, as well as having the ability to detect and be prepared to respond to cyber incidents when they occur. In the global landscape of ever-increasing digital threats and cyber warfare, maintaining robust cybersecurity is a cornerstone of enterprise risk management.

Cybersecurity is important because of our modern society's total dependence on digital technology. Cybersecurity is particularly important for digital governance and business processes in critical sectors such as power, transport, communications, finance, defence and government administration. Maintaining adequate cybersecurity in all these environments is among the greatest challenges facing society, where education and competence in cybersecurity is a key factor.

UiO provides education/continuing education for masters and bachelors, and publishes textbooks on cybersecurity, with associated learning resources. UiO's bachelor/master/PhD educations in cybersecurity are always at the forefront of the field through extensive cybersecurity research.

Cybersecurity is also called digital security, information security, data security or ICT security, which confirms the saying that "we have many names for the things we love".

Cybersecurity is a subcategory of the concept of security which generally means the protection of assets from harm. Other subcategories of security are e.g. societal security (critical infrastructure), civic security (law and order), national security (preservation of national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and government), and environmental security (nature and environment). The antonym of cybersecurity is cyber insecurity which means the lack of protection of digital assets from harm. The World Economic Forum ranks cyber insecurity as the 6th largest global risk, after armed conflicts between states in 5th place. The WEF thus points out the seriousness of the fact that a large proportion of our digital assets have inadequate protection against global cyber threats.
