Digital Twins in and beyond the Extractive Industries

Everybody wishes to build a digital twin, but it is unclear as to what the idea means. This presentation will try to clarify what a digital twin is and show how it can be a valuable tool in digitalization.

The presentation builds on the work being done here in the area of digital twins in the energy and process industry supply chain. The SIRIUS centre has been working on the informatics challenges of digital twins since its start-up in 2016. The centre developed a research and innovation agenda for twins, which was used to apply successfully for PeTWIN, a large Norwegian-Brazilian project on digital twins in the oil and gas industry. We are now building our ongoing agenda for scalable, sustainable and usable digital twins around this project. We are also using this work as the core of a broader program of digital twin research through the University’s new dScience centre.

At this talk you will hear about:

  • What a digital twin is. What it isn’t. What the implications are of digital twins for informatics research, teaching and innovation.
  • The key areas informatics research related to digital twins.
  • The PeTWIN project and the broader SIRIUS digital twin program.
  • The vision for a dScience digital twin program.
