Industrial and Public Sector PhD Scheme

Do you represent a Norwegian enterprise that wants to strengthen its research expertise and research activity? Or would you like to enhance your competence by pursuing a PhD at your current workplace?

The Industrial and Public Sector PhD Schemes are three-year research training programmes. An employee in a Norwegian private company or public organisation undertakes a standard PhD education on a topic that is relevant to the organisation. The employee is admitted to the PhD programme and divides their time between the organisation and the Department of Informatics.

With the Industrial PhD and Public Sector PhD schemes, we achieve:

  • The organisation strengthens its core business, services, and products by building expertise tailored to its own framework and needs. The organisation will also establish and maintain collaboration with the Department of Informatics and gain access to knowledge, expertise, and infrastructure.
  • The employee obtains a PhD and research training based on their insight into the company’s key challenges, as well as research competence to address these.
  • The Department of Informatics establishes and further develops collaborations with organisations that have unique expertise in their fields and gain PhD candidates with insight into organisations’ current challenges and needs.

Organisations that enter into an Industrial or Public Sector PhD agreement receive an annual financial grant from the Research Council of Norway corresponding to a maximum of 50 percent of the current PhD fellowship rate for three years. The funding is provided as project support for the company, not as a personal scholarship for the candidate.

If this sounds interesting or if you have questions about the scheme, please feel free to contact one of our senior advisors (Mozhdeh Sheibani Harat or Pernille Adine Nordby), our section heads, or staff within the relevant research area.
