Topic: Optimal Energy Management in Fully Electric Norwegian Houses

Speaker: Meysam Aboutalebi from ITS, UiO.

Abstract:

Energy systems are evolving towards sustainability, flexibility, and efficiency, with the residential sector contributing significantly through solar installations, heat pumps, electric vehicles, and smart technologies. The EU's Nearly-Zero-Energy Building standards emphasize reduced energy demand and reliance on renewable resources, supporting the integration of residential solar systems. In this context, demand-side management plays a pivotal role in optimizing energy use and enhancing grid flexibility, particularly through the strategic management of heat pumps and smart appliances. Effective use of thermal mass control can substantially reduce costs while maintaining thermal demand within acceptable thresholds. Norway, a pioneering country in adopting fully electric homes with high heat pump and electric vehicle usage, presents a unique opportunity to leverage optimal energy management strategies for improved operational efficiency and reduced peak loads. Studies indicate that the potential flexibility from demand-side management in Norway ranges around 2,400 MW for heat pumps, highlighting the importance of dynamic pricing models that incentivize load shifting. In this presentation, smart energy management strategies are explored for an all-electric house that integrates solar energy with thermal storage. A comprehensive demand-side management model based on the Norwegian energy billing system is presented, addressing cost-effectiveness and energy flexibility along with self-supply and comfort in a real-world residential case study.
