The 18th PriTEM Research Seminar

Topic: Let’s Talk About Data Privacy: Valuing Personal Data in the Energy Transition

Speaker: Juliana Zhang from IFI, UiO.

Abstract:

The idea of flexibility trading in the form of P2P energy trading and demand response has frequently been studied from technological and economic perspective. However, incentives aside, a key barrier that has often been underestimated is the domain of data privacy. This presentation introduces the idea that privacy preferences are not monolithic; rather, individuals approach privacy through two distinct lenses—intrinsic preferences, where privacy is valued for its own sake, and instrumental preferences, where privacy is seen to a means to achieve other ends (such as safety, control, or economic benefit). These privacy preferences are affected by individual and contextual differences. Factors such as demographic, past experiences with privacy invasions, incentives for privacy trade-off, uncertainties, etc. jointly influence individual's willingness to share data. We will look into some of the recurring themes in privacy research and their potential application within the context of energy-related data sharing. In the field of behavioral economics and psychology, researchers frequently use “willingness-to-accept (WTA)” to assess individual differences in their willingness to share data by assigning monetary value to privacy, i.e. privacy valuation. Together, we will discuss how we can measure WTA effectively and integrate it within the framework of interdisciplinary study.
