Hazards

Danger of solder splatter The tip of the soldering iron is hot Fumes when soldering Fumes when soldering with leaded solder

Operational Safety

Standard Operating Procedure

  1. Turn on the Weller fume extractor. It is located under the table.
  2. Place the fume extractor hood such that it can displace the soldering gases.
  3. Ensure that soldering temperature is set to between 350 and 370 degrees Celsius. Higher temperatures will result in more gases and increased spray hazard.
  4. Use safety glasses!
  5. Solder your thing.
  6. Turn off the soldering iron when you are done.
  7. Turn off the fume extractor.
  8. Clean up after you.
  9. Wash your hands.

How to solder

We have courses in soldering at Sonen. If you are in immediate need of using the soldering iron, ask other people at Sonen or contact Sonen staff at ifi-sonen@ifi.uio.no.

Tips

Desoldering

At Sonen, we have two ways of desoldering. Using a desoldering pump or using wick.

Not enough hands?

We are aware that most humans do not have three or more hands. Feel free to use our third-hand tool.
