Attack analysis of the Open Automated Demand Response protocol

OpenADR (Open Automated Demand Response) is an open and standardized communication protocol designed to automate demand response (DR) programs in energy systems. It enables utilities and grid operators to send real-time signals to energy consumers, such as businesses and households, allowing them to adjust their energy consumption based on grid conditions, pricing, or peak demand periods. OpenADR helps balance supply and demand on the grid by encouraging voluntary reductions in electricity use during high-demand periods or grid emergencies. By providing an interoperable framework, OpenADR promotes efficient energy use, integrates renewable energy sources, and supports grid reliability, while also giving consumers the opportunity to reduce costs through more informed energy management.

The thesis topic is to develop and test different attacks for OpenADR, evaluate the results and suggest protections and mitigations. The first step of the analysis is to build a simplified virtual playground, where different attack options can be analyzed.
