Agentic coding in resource-constrained settings

Agentic coding refers to the use of AI agents to develop programs with little human intervention. What are the potential challenges and benefits of this in a distributed open source platform ecosystem aiming to serve health systems in resource-constrained settings?

This topic looks at the ecosystem around the DHIS2 software, with developers working globally on both the core platform and generic and bespoke applications to support health service provision. Potential topics include

  • How can agentic coding improve participatory design by moving coding closer to the uesrs? How can users take a more active role in such software development?
  • How does agentic coding shift the balance between resource-rich and resource-poor groups of actors? Will agentic coding increase activity in the ecosystem, or strengthen/marginalize current actors?
  • How, and under what circumstances, can agentic coding impact the security and integrity of software made?
  • Will we move from a focus on generic to more bespoke solutions? How will this impact global software and knowledge sharing in the ecosystem?

DHIS2 is an open source health management platform with distributed development. Actors around the world, also in low income countries, are engaged in various aspects of its development. Several have begun to apply agents in this development already
