The advent of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum led to the popularity of electronic wallets. Since then, the functionality and scope of electronic wallets have ever been increasing. Today, digital wallets are used to store personal user ID information, similar to a passport, as well as digital credentials, such as diploma or healthcare certificates. Digital passports for products are also a form of electronic wallets.
This popularity was followed by emergence of new standards for digital wallets, such as EBSI and EIDAS 2.0. There is already a plethora of immensely popular projects in Europe. With time, digital wallets will be integrated with, and partially will even replace the existing digitalisation infrastructure in Norway. The Blockchain Lab at UiO is collaborating within this area with the Norwegian Agency for Digitalisation (DigDir).
The goal of this project is to study existing technologies for digital ID wallets and identify what is missing in those technologies in order to support the requirements of EBSI and EIDAS 2.0. Ideally, the project will lead to extending the existing technologies with additional specific features.
