Alien science fiction (SF) depicts encounters between species, intelligences, and civilisations. Such visions function as a way of exploring the treatment of plural populations, as they reflect on the many possibilities and harms of interaction between groups of diverse cultural origins.
Feminist and afrofuturist scholars, such as Ursula le Guin and Octavia Butler, use such territories to challenge the violence of contemporary societies and imagine other ways that humans with different backgrounds could live together in harmony.
In this project, students will use science fiction stories of alien encounters to reimagine the futures of digital technologies. They will draw inspiration from alien SF to create new concepts, prototypes, or fictions of the futures of digital technologies.
