Conferral summary

Main research findings

Photovoltaic (PV) systems play an integral role in the green energy transition, and as their deployment expands, ensuring their long-term performance and reliability becomes increasingly important. However, existing methods for quantifying how defects in PV modules affect the energy yield of PV plants are limited, which makes it difficult to understand the role PV module reliability plays in long-term PV system performance. Therefore, this thesis explores the combination of infrared thermography and production data timeseries analysis, to determine how thermal signatures caused by defects in modules impact PV plant energy yield.

The research demonstrates that when the two techniques are combined, the impact of thermal signatures detected by IRT can be determined. By examining production data timeseries over several years, the work provides insights into the long-term evolution of power loss from thermal signatures. Additionally, the thesis addresses snow-related losses in PV systems installed in colder climates, proposing novel snow mitigation strategies and advanced snow loss modeling to reduce energy loss.

Overall, this thesis contributes to more effective operations and maintenance (O&M) practices, which can help optimize performance and lower costs in both current and future PV installations.
