Green Hydrogen from air (FAIR)

About the project

A promising way to avoid carbon emissions is the generation of hydrogen using renewable energy for water electrolysis (green hydrogen). There is, however, a geographic mismatch between renewable energy sources distribution and freshwater availability, where areas rich in renewable energy are commonly short in water supply.

With the present project, we propose a novel solid state photoelectrochemical cell able to directly produce hydrogen from the atmosphere. The industrial applications and social impact of the device will be very relevant, producing green hydrogen sustainably with minimal impact.

With FAIR we aim to answer the following research questions:

  • What are the main limiting factors for increased solar-to-chemical efficiency?
  • What are the key engineering aspects for the scale-up of the device?
  • How do real environmental conditions influence the deployment of this technology?
