INNOVH2UP - Towards upscaling green hydrogen production

About the project

Production and use of hydrogen as a green and renewable fuel are increasingly considered as a central component in the transition to a green economy. In this project, the team will address the existing gap between lab-scale and larger scale devices for hydrogen production by water photo-electrolysis.

The uniqueness of our concept is the use of earth-abundant elements, exclusively, in our device. This is extremely important as water electrolysis suffers from the high cost of certain catalysts, such as noble metals (Pt, Ir, Ru etc.) that hinder its implementation at a larger scale. Moreover, our device is based on established and widely spread technologies, such as electrodeposition and solar cell assembly. Off-grid and off-shore hydrogen production is also part of the market we are aiming for, especially for the supply of green energy in remote areas and areas with no electrical or other infrastructure.
