Completion of the Master's degree
Completion of the Master's degree consists of submitting the Master's thesis and conducting a public presentation followed by an examination in the form of a Q&A.
Deadline for submission
The ordinary deadline for submission of a long thesis is 15 May / 15 November, and week 21 / 51 for a short thesis. The deadline for submission of your thesis is registered in Studentweb. Your thesis must be submitted at least 3 weeks prior to your final exam. Your supervisor is responsible for finding an external examiner, and for coordinating the time for the exam.
Submission of your master’s thesis
Before your deadline you must do as follows:
- First things first: finish your thesis! Practical information for writing and finishing your thesis:
- Templates
- Helpful tips from the University Library
- Be aware of your use of sources and citations - the master's thesis is run through plagiarism control via Ouriginal.
- Tips for using artificial intelligence (AI) in your thesis (in Norwegian - let us know if you have trouble translating)
- Grade descriptions are explained by the MN faculty.
- The deadline for submission can be found in StudentWeb. From September 15th 2025, all master theses at UiO must be submitted in Inspera for grading and publication in the Norwegian Research Information Repository (NVA). The previous DUO Research Archive has been discontinued. The web page Master thesis contains general information about submission of the thesis and publication in NVA. Follow the instructions for Submitting master's thesis to Inspera when submitting. Please familiarise yourself with the information about and submission in Inspera well in advance before the submission deadline.
- Note that the theoretical curriculum (your courses) must normally be passed before submitting your assignment, and in cases where the programme council has made exception to this rule, the last exam must be passed before you can present your master's thesis and receive your grade. You must also have paid your semester fee and be registered for the semester in which you present your thesis.
Printing of thesis
You are not required to submit a paper version of your thesis to the Department of Technology Systems, however having a paper version available for yourself during the examination maybe helpful.
The Department of Technology Systems will pay for printing of up to 4 copies of your thesis, in addition to copies for your supervisors, should they want a copy. In order to have your expenses covered you need to order printing from the Graphic Centre at the University of Oslo, see further instructions.
For printing, include the following codes:
-
Sub-project code (delprosjekt): 102423074
-
Cost centre (koststed): 15600000
The final presentation and examination
The presentation of the master's thesis takes place approximately 3 weeks after submission and can affect your grade. The procedure is as follows:
- The supervisor(s) will not be a part of setting the grade, but will provide the examiners a full account on how the student has worked with the thesis in a pre-meeting.
- The candidate will hold a public presentation of around 30 minutes and give an overview of the thesis. The following subjects will normally be presented: the problem and topic for the thesis, method and theory, results and conclusions, as well as discussion related to earlier research in the field.
- After the presentation there will be questions for you to answer. Normally, audience members can stay and participate for questions, but we ask that only the candidate, supervisors and examiners are part of the actual examination.
- Directly after the examination, the candidate leaves the room. The examiners and supervisors discuss and sum up the candidate’s presentation and examination. The supervisors will then leave the room before the examiners discuss the final grade.
- The final grade is being set without the supervisors present. Two grades must be set:
- One (sub-)grade on the written work of the master thesis, taken into consideration the supervisors’ input. If the candidate later chooses to submit an appeal against the grade, this grade is the only one that can be contested.
- One final, total grade, where the presentation and the examination also counts. This final grade is the grade that will appear on the diploma. The examiners must judge by their best efforts how to weight the written thesis against the oral presentation/examination when finalizing the final grade.
- After the grade is set, the candidate will receive a short, oral explanation of the grade by one of the examiners, with both candidate and supervisor present.
Diploma
Your diploma will be issued by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences when you have passed your final exam. You will find the digital diploma as a digitally signed pdf in the document archive in Studentweb. You can also share it with others via the Diploma Registry.
