This work presents a development process for small spacecraft antennas. By adapting a rapid-prototyping approach, the project shows what worked, what failed, and what was learned along the way. The result is a deployable, spring-based conical antenna that operates over a wide frequency range. Through repeated testing and refinement, the design was matured into a robust solution, featuring a novel structure and feed, with parts of the electronics integrated into the carbon-fibre spring. The antenna was put through a series of environmental tests to simulate launch and the space environment, and it survived without any degradation. The antenna can be tailored to different missions and helps fill a gap in mature broadband UHF technologies for small spacecraft.
