I am interested in the social dimensions of energy systems and especially fairness and socially just energy transitions. When designing an energy system, it is important to not only consider the technical and economic conditions, but also the social implications that energy infrastructure have on local communities. Without consideration, certain regions and groups of society may have to bear the burden of transitioning to a low-carbon society, while other reap the benefits.
In my PhD I am exploring how social acceptance and energy justice aspects may be included in energy and power system models which may be used to generate insight for the design of socially accepted and just policies and transition pathways. Part of the work is structured around, together with my colleagues, developing the power system model highRES and the representation of Norway in an interconnected European power system for 2050.
My approach is interdisciplinary and I combine methods and concepts from both technology and social science.
