Operation, Calibration, Field Measurements, and Validation of the Ground-Based Rover Prototype

We are developing a Neutron and Gamma-ray spectrometer for deploying it on the Moon and Mars, in orbit or on a lander, to find water and other volatiles of interest for in-situ resource utilization (ISRU).

Neutron and Gamma-ray spectroscopy is a powerful tool in geophysics, and planetary science as it is the only technique that provides bulk chemical composition and elemental abundance at depth, at a range of spatial scales, which – for planetary bodies – can provide lithology, mineralogy and chemistry. Importantly, such an instrument package can identify and quantify water and other key elements relevant to assessing planetary volatile abundances and evolution, assessing radioactivity and habitability to advance sustainable human exploration.

Objectives:

This project is dedicated to the operational deployment and comprehensive validation of the ground-based rover prototype, integrating cutting-edge scientific techniques with practical fieldwork. The focus is on calibrating the rover's instruments, conducting field measurements, and comparing real-world data with model predictions for rigorous scientific evaluation.

Key Tasks:

  • Operational Deployment: Prepare the ground-based rover prototype for field deployment, ensuring all systems, sensors, and instruments are operational and properly configured.
  • Calibration Procedures: Develop and execute calibration protocols for all onboard instruments, including the Compact Gamma-ray and Neutron Counter (C-GRNC) and environmental sensors. This step is critical to ensuring the accuracy and reliability of collected data.
  • Field Measurement Campaign: Plan and execute a series of field measurement campaigns in diverse environments to capture a wide range of environmental conditions and radiation levels.
  • Data Collection and Real-time Analysis: Collect data during field measurements and analyse it in real-time to identify any anomalies or interesting trends. Address any operational issues that arise promptly.
  • Comparison with Models and Simulations: Compare the field-measured data with the results obtained from previous modelling and simulation efforts. Assess the accuracy of the models in predicting real-world environmental conditions and radiation levels.
  • Scientific Analysis: Conduct a scientifically rigorous analysis of the collected data, evaluating the impact of environmental factors on radiation levels and drawing conclusions about the environmental conditions studied.
  • Validation and Validation Report: Prepare a comprehensive validation report that summarizes the findings of the project. Document the validation process, highlight any discrepancies between the model and real-world data, and provide insights into the environmental dynamics observed during field measurements.
  • Recommendations: Based on the project's findings, offer recommendations for potential improvements or adjustments to the rover prototype, modelling techniques, or environmental monitoring strategies.

By completing this project, we aim to validate the capabilities of the ground-based rover prototype and assess the accuracy of the environmental models and simulations developed in earlier projects. The scientific insights gained through this rigorous fieldwork will contribute to our understanding of radiation and environmental dynamics in various settings, paving the way for more informed decision-making and resource management practices.
