We are building instrumentation for mapping of the lunar surface for elemental abundance (finding water on the moon). To utilize the data that we hope to receive from our instrument in lunar orbit/surface, we need to develop a data processing pipeline, a data analysis framework that handles data on different levels:
- Level 1: raw data unpacked, reformatted, house-keeping & context data integrated
- Level 2: context calibration and corrections (such as altitude variations, background noise, temperature effects)
- Level 3: consistent data sets in uniform space-time grid, GR and N separated
- Level 4: data products, such as abundance maps
Measurement data from lab experiments is available, but generation of synthetic test data on different processing levels will be required, as well. The data pipeline shall be tested on existing datasets from previous gamma-ray and neutron spectrometers, such as LP or KPLO.
This project builds on a previous thesis and continues and extends the development.
The objective of the project are:
revise the data processing tasks for the different levels
investigate the impact various operation parameters on the measurement data, such as altitude, topography, temperature, pointing angle
implement various calibration routines for the investigated operation parameters
generate synthetic measurement data for pipeline testing
verify pipeline with synthetic and historical data
identify uncertainties
This project can be either 30 or 60 credits.
