SpaceSys_2: Space Debris Mitigation

The Centre for Space, Sensors, and Systems (CENSSS) is currently working on a CubeSat mission, CENSSat-1 with launch targeted in 2027.

In this context we offer the following thesis topics:

CENSSat-1 De-orbit analysis

Before launch, all satellites have to prove that the are compliant with current de-orbiting regulations. Space debris laws and regulations are currently adapting to the increased amount of small satellites in orbit around Earth. In this task, the new regulations about space debris will be investigated, the orbit of CENSSat-1 will be analysed with tools like DRAMA, OSKAR and others, and orbit parameters  compatible to the new rules will be identified. Options for active de-orbiting can be investigated, as well.

(The topic can be extended to 60SP if necessary)

Development of a CubeSat compatible de-orbiting mechanism

Before launch, all satellites have to prove that the are compliant with current de-orbiting regulations. Space debris laws and regulations are currently adapting to the increased amount of small satellites in orbit around Earth. If a small satellite, for scientific reasons, requires an orbit that does not allow for passive de-orbiting, active mechanisms, such as deployable drag sails or propulsion, need to be included. In this task, you investigate the options for de-orbiting CubeSats, identify their potentials and drawbacks and develop a  concept for de-orbiting mechanism suitable for CENSSat-1.
