MA_1: Martian aurora variability

Mars has a very different aurora process than Earth, including a form of global, long-lasting aurora called diffuse Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) aurora.

The current working hypothesis of the scientific community is that this form of aurora is smooth and does not vary rapidly.

The Perseverance rover on Mars recently discovered that this global aurora is visible in green colors, and have taken measurements of it on two separate occasions. Preliminary analysis indicated that this aurora actually might be varying with both time and space, at a higher rate than assumed previously.

This thesis project involved image processing of highly noisy data from the Mastcam-Z cameras on the rover, in order to try and isolate the green aurora signal, and search for any variability within its appearance.

ECTS: 30 or 60 ECTS are possible, with start August 2027/January 2028
