NORSTAGE Norwegian Structures in Topology, Algebra and Geometry

Duration
01.06.2026–31.05.2028

NORSTAGE is a national research network aimed at strengthening Norwayʼs research in algebra, geometry, and topology. These are central areas of pure mathematics with deep roots in Norwegian mathematics going back to Niels Henrik Abel and Sophus Lie. The fields explore everything from geometric spaces and shapes in many dimensions to abstract structures that describe symmetries and transformations. Algebraic geometry studies spaces and shapes defined by equations using algebraic methods, while topology studies geometric properties that remain unchanged under continuous transformations of a space. Although much of this research is theoretical, it is important for technologies such as cryptography, data processing, robotics, and models in physics and computer science.

Contact

NORSTAGE brings together researchers from NTNU, UiB, UiO and UiS with the goal of creating a more connected and active research environment where researchers and students can meet and collaborate. The network will organize conferences, workshops, and research schools that give masterʼs and PhD students opportunities to learn advanced topics in algebra and topology. One of these activities is the long-standing summer school in Nordfjordeid, which for decades has been an important meeting place for young mathematicians from Norway and abroad.

Internationalization is also a key part of the project. Travel support and opportunities for research stays will allow young researchers to work with leading mathematical communities in Europe, while international experts will be invited to Norway to give lectures and participate in research projects. These connections will strengthen research development and increase the international visibility of Norwegian mathematics.

NORSTAGE aims to build a more active and unified mathematical community in Norway. By investing in basic research and supporting new talents, the project contributes to knowledge that can help shape future scientific and technological developments.
