Media attention for supervolcano study co-authored by Trond H. Torsvik

Research led by the British Geological Survey with contributions from the University of Oslo, including Professor Trond H. Torsvik from PHAB, has attracted international media attention following the discovery of evidence for a 454-million-year-old “supervolcano” buried beneath eastern England.

Published in GSA Bulletin, the study is titled "The Wash Igneous Complex of eastern England: A candidate Avalonian source for Sandbian tephra in Baltoscandia and implications for closure of the Tornquist Sea". It identifies the Wash Igneous Complex as a potential source of the widespread Kinnekulle ash layer preserved across Scandinavia and the Baltic region, providing new insights into Ordovician volcanism and the closure of the Tornquist Sea.

The findings were highlighted by both the BBC and the British Geological Survey as a major advance in understanding the geological history linking England and Scandinavia.
