Expanding the boundaries of solar physics

As one of nine Centres of Excellence (SFF) at the University of Oslo, RoCS - Rosseland Centre for Solar Physics, has become a thriving international hub with 48 employees from around the globe.

The centre is three and a half years into their 10-years period and has become a strong international force.

The overarching goal of the project is understanding the workings of the energetic Sun.

When the centre opened in November 2017, the Sun was close to minimum activity in its 11-year cycle but the activity is now building up towards an expected maximum in 2025. This will make it possible to get unprecedented observations of the active Sun to be compared with the detailed simulations carried out at RoCS.
