UiO:Life Science welcomes you to the Oslo Life Science Conference – Building the Life Science City – 15th–17th February 2017.

American Geophysical Union had recently its big annual fall meeting in San Francisco. Here participated PhD fellow Solveig Havstad Winsvold, Department of Geosciences. She presented a new way to measure glaciers, now mentioned in an article by NASA SCIENCE.

Several interested members of the public and researchers working with natural hazards and earthquakes were in the audience on 13. December to follow the seminar on Risk and management of earthquakes. CEED-professor Torgeir B. Andersen gave a lecture about why Italy are affected by a large number of earthquakes and discussed several aspects concerning the geology of earthquakes.

UiO:Life Science is one of three large interdisciplinary strategic areas at UiO. Our strategy states that we shall strengthen quality and interaction in research; recruit, educate and develop talents; and promote innovation in the life sciences related to environment and health. A life sciences building, which is planned for completion in 2023, is a significant aspect of our work.

Anders Malthe-Sørensen, Stephanie Werner and Mari Helén Varøy are newly elected representatives for permanent and temporary academic staff, and technical/administrative staff.

Quality assurance of the management base and cost estimates before the project is submitted to Parliament for approval and funding (QA2) of the planned life science building at UiO started August 16th according to the time schedule and is to be finished till Christmas.

At the 14th and 15th  of September the Nordic Life Science Days is arranged in Stockholm. In the evening the 13th a Norwegian–Swedish networking is taking place at the Norwegian Embassy in Stockholm.

The University of Oslo (UiO) research prize for 2016 was given to Professor Trond H. Torsvik in a formal ceremony at University's Aula on Friday 2nd September 2016. 

Professor of meteorology Jón Egill Kristjánsson in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Oslo passed away in a tragic accident in Jotunheimen National Park on the 14^th of August, 2016, at age 55.

CEED - Centre of Earth Evolution and Dynamics at Department of gescoences/UIO recently launched a brand new website for the Ivar Giæver Geomagnetic Laboratory.  This is a National Norwegian research laboratory and research infrastructure for geomagnetism, supported by CEED and the Norwegian Research Council of Norway.

The director for UiO:Life Science, Finn-Eirik Johansen, has established an advisory management team and hired Morten Egeberg as the administrative leader for UiO:Life Science.

Today it was announced who will get the foremost awards for 2016 from University of Oslo. Gratifying was that Professor of geodynamics Trond Helge Torsvik from Department of Geosciences and The Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics (CEED) - is awarded the University of Oslo's research prize.

In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 17 the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought to promote public awareness of the issue. The European Drought Centre mark this day by publish online a talk of Henny A.J. Congratulations to Research fellow Thorben Dunse, Department of Geosciences, one of two early career scientists nominated for the International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS) 2016 Early Career Scientist Prize.

Department of Geosciences participates in the FME centre SUCCESS which does research on CO2 storage. The SUCCESS centre is in 2016 entering into the final two years and is now in the phase of concluding its work. 

Congratulations to PhD Research fellow Felix Matt, Department of Geosciences for winning the Outstanding Student Paper Award (OSPA) for his talk about the impact of aerosols on the cryosphere. The presentation was given at the American Geophysical Union’s (AGU) Fall Meeting this past December.

Five Japanese PhD students and several academic staff from Hokkaido University, Sapporo, followed this year the course GEO9440 - Cryospheric modeling, provided by the Department of Geosciences. All of them participated in the exchange project CryoEAST, supported by the High North Programme/DIKU.
