Lightning-talks: Computation in Physics Education

Henning V. Myhrehagen, Karl Henrik Fredly, and Hannah Christine Sabo are working on separate research projects in Tor Ole Odden’s research group at CCSE. Their projects address computation/programming in different parts of physics education. Here are the abstracts of the three lightning talks they will give:

Henning - PhD candidate

What programming skills can we expect Norwegian upper secondary school physics students to have learned when they enter a physics program in higher education? The talk will give a brief overview of how programming is presented in the curriculum, textbooks, and the written exam.

Karl Henrik - PhD candidate

What programming skills do physics bachelor students learn, and what skills should they learn? What programming instruction is done throughout their program, and what is expected and assessed?

Hannah - Postdoc

How do university-level physics instructors in the United States assess their students’ computational physics assignments? How do those instructors make those decisions?

The bi-weekly ODD seminar series at CCSE

The Open Discussions on Didactics (ODD) is a seminar series on Mondays at 13.00 every other week (odd week numbers).

The seminar is an informal arena to present and discuss learning theory, educational research and teaching experiences within computational science. To cater to the highly heterogeneous backgrounds and interests of students, teachers and researchers in our environment, we aim for seminars that introduce listeners to new ideas within a broad spectrum of aspects, and that invites reflection and discussion.

Presentations need not be mature and polished - to the contrary we hope that as many as possible wants to share undigested observations and reflections in short presentations of varied form and topics. We hope to have enough contributions to frequently have the meetings as lightning talk sessions, where three different speakers will each give a 5-10-minute presentation followed by discussion.
