Developing first-year computer science students’ feedback literacy through self-reflection and self-assessment

Omid Mirmotahari: For feedback processes to be enhanced, students need both appreciation on how feedback can operate effectively and strategies to use feedback within the curriculum. Several studies that examined feedback exchanged during student peer-review process have shown some challenges regarding students’ confidence in their own knowledge to perform assessment.

It has also been found that, due to students’ negative perception of their own level of competence, they have limited confidence in their fellow students assessing their assignment. Lack of clarity about assessment criteria and standards are a source of anxiety for many first-year university students.

Student feedback literacy denotes the understanding, capacity and disposition needed to make sense of information and use it to enhance work and learning strategies. Therefore, it is crucial to have a good foundation before exposing students to providing each other feedback. We claim that supporting the development of students feedback literacy can be done by scaffolding strategies.

We would like to use the ODD-seminar environment to discuss how to build a framework for developing feedback literacy for students throughout their 3-years study. We will present some ideas on how to implement a scaffolding method for the feedback literacy development - and would be very glad to get the listeners point of view on the challenges they see.

The bi-weekly ODD seminar series at CCSE

The Open Discussions on Didactics (ODD) is a seminar series on Mondays at 13.00 every other week (odd week numbers).

The seminar is an informal arena to present and discuss learning theory, educational research and teaching experiences within computational science. To cater to the highly heterogeneous backgrounds and interests of students, teachers and researchers in our environment, we aim for seminars that introduce listeners to new ideas within a broad spectrum of aspects, and that invites reflection and discussion.

Presentations need not be mature and polished - to the contrary we hope that as many as possible wants to share undigested observations and reflections in short presentations of varied form and topics. We hope to have enough contributions to frequently have the meetings as lightning talk sessions, where three different speakers will each give a 5-10-minute presentation followed by discussion.
