Background

I am a researcher at the Instituto Español de Oceanografia (IEO-CSIC) and have maintained a longstanding collaboration with the CEES since my posdoctoral years.

During the first decade of my career, I had the privilege of working on several marine ecosystems, including the Cantabrian Sea (Bay of Biscay), the North Sea, the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Gulf of Cadiz, the Barents Sea, the Icelandic Waters and the Canary Current (West Africa). By applying statistical models to time series data from these ecosystems, I explored ecological properties such as trophic control, the likelihood of regime shifts, and ecosystem resilience under various scenarios. Most of this work was done in collaboration with my CEES colleagues of the Marine Group.

When I joined IEO, I developed a deeper interest in holistic approaches, aiming to contribute to the implementation of ecosystem-based management (EBM) through a socio-ecological systems (SES) perspective. In recent years, my career has taken a science diplomacy turn, involving collaboration with scientists from West Africa.

Active projects include:

MISSION ATLANTIC (https://missionatlantic.eu/), which is conducting an integrated assessment (IEA) of the entire Atlantic. I lead the Canary Current case study.

In SNAPQUIVIR (https://snapquivir.com/), we are challenging the current decision-support framework to advance ecosystem-based management (EBM) in the Guadalquivir estuary-Gulf of Cadiz social and ecological (SES) system.

WAGAS aims to assess trade-offs between the new offshore gas sector off Senegal-Mauritania, and other sectors, including fishing and conservation, as well as its implications for migration to Europe.

In terms of advisory roles, I am involved in several organisations that operate at the science-policy interface.

ICES (https://www.ices.dk/) is a leading intergovernmental marine science organization. Historically focused on fisheries advice, ICES has expanded its scope to provide broader ecosystem-based guidance. I am actively involved in this process and participate in several expert groups that focus on both ecosystem advice benchmarking and the provision of ecosystem science, particularly the Ecosystem Overviews, which are part of ICES’ recurrent advice. I have been a member of the ICES Working Group on Ecosystem Assessment of Western European Shelf Seas since 2013 and chaired the group from 2019 to 2022.

I contributed to the just-released IPBES (https://www.ipbes.net/) Nexus Assessment (2022-2024) as lead author of Chapter 5.5, Options for Delivering Sustainable Biodiversity-Related Approaches to Climate Change, Adaptation, and Mitigation. In this chapter, I was responsible for outlining the marine response options.

I am a member of the Joint Scientific Committees for the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreements (SFPA) between the EU and Morocco, Senegal and The Gambia, where I contribute to the implementation of the EBM framework.
