  Context Within Rangifer ranges, many studies focus on expanding infrastructure and human activity negatively influencing habitat use. Little documentation exists on how disturbances act in synergy (i.e. cumulative effects), nor methods to test such effects. Objectives (1) Investigate how cumulative disturbance at different distances affects reindeer habitat use and (2) at what disturbance levels and distances loss of habitat functionality occurs. Methods Disturbance intensity levels for trails and infrastructure were based on expected amount of human activity, on a scale from 1 to 6. To test cumulative disturbance, we adapted the multi-grain method and summed-up disturbance intensity levels within “disturbance distance intervals” (0–0.25, 0.25–1, 1–2 km, etc. instead of 0–0.25, 0–1, 0–2 km, etc.), and tested reindeers’ avoidance using GPS data for 2011–2018. Results We found decreased habitat use within 0.25 km with increasing cumulative disturbance for snow free and winter seasons. For spring, a similar effect occurred up to 1 km. Reductions in use in areas with highest cumulative disturbance within these zones were between 92 and 98%. Strongest avoidance during spring supports previous studies. Comparatively, the multi-grain approach showed negative effects up to 3 km. Conclusions Our approach provides novel results and precisely estimates where cumulative effects actually occur. Reindeer in our study tolerate low intensities of human disturbance, while further increase in disturbance intensity reduces habitat functionality. We suggest clustering future human developments within areas of high disturbance, i.e. where functional habitat use is already lost or highly reduced. Our method can be used for other areas and species.

  The Fakken Wind farm (WF) was built in 2010–12 on the Fakken peninsula on the south-east corner of the island of Vannøy. Field and GPS sampling was conducted to test the interaction between reindeer spatial use and the WF with associated infrastructure for the period 2007–2015. “Before data” for both direct observations and GPS-positions confirmed that the site where the WF was built was an important winter grazing area for reindeer. Testing data from before, during and after construction of the WF showed that the overall use on the island and for the WF area did not change during the study period. The reindeer density did not vary significantly among the periods, both for the WF and power line areas. We found no avoidance responses on reindeer spatial use towards the WF during the operation periods for direct observation data. However, we found some significant changes in reindeer area use that may be related to disturbance from human activities for the calving period during construction in WF zone 1 and road zone 1 (GPS-data), and for the power line area during construction in summer and autumn (direct observational data). Our study site represents an area where coexistence of reindeer husbandry and wind energy development is possible, with negligible effects on reindeer spatial use during and after WF development. We recommend that new WFs should be built close to existing infrastructure and limit an increase in human accessibility to remote areas where reindeer are less accustomed to human activity.

  We conducted large-scale, replicated experiments to test the effects of two parallel power lines on area use, behaviour, and activity of semidomestic reindeer in enclosures. Yearling female reindeer were released into four 50×400?m enclosures; two treatment enclosures with power lines and two control enclosures. Reindeer from two herds, one from Kautokeino (domestic tame) and one from Vågå, (domestic wild) were tested separately and compared. Individual location within the enclosures was not affected by the power lines. Effects on restless behaviour were ambiguous, with slightly more restless behaviour in the treatment enclosures for the domestic tame reindeer, while the domestic wild reindeer maintained a stable level in the treatment enclosures, increasing with time in the control enclosures. Activity changes were slightly more common among animals within treatment enclosures for both herds, with no indication of habituation during the experiment. The domestic wild reindeer had more than three times the amount of restless behaviour than the domestic tame reindeer. Our study indicates that for reindeer in enclosures, the disturbance from a power line construction is negligible. This suggests that power lines are a minor disturbing factor compared to human handling when using fenced in areas like grazing gardens in reindeer husbandry.

  Oslofjorden og tilhørende elver har over lang tid blitt påvirket av menneskelig aktivitet. Dette har konsekvenser for artene som lever der, slik som laks (Salmo salar) og ørret (Salmo trutta), der laks er en truet art (NT). I Lysakerelva har det blitt gjennomført flere tiltak for å styrke de anadrome bestandene, slik som utsetting av laksefisk både i anadrom strekning og oppstrøms anadrom barriere. Begrunnelsene har vært å legge til rette for fiske og kompensere for menneskelig påvirkning. Laks og ørret har en overlappende nisje som blir påvirket av konkurranse, samt abiotiske faktorer. Utsetting av laksefisk kan derfor påvirke konkurranse-forholdet mellom artene. Denne oppgaven har undersøkt interaksjonen mellom laks og ørret i Lysakerelva. Hovedspørsmålet har vært om utsetting av laksefisk har hatt en påvirkning på den stasjonære ørreten, samt hvilke forvaltningsmessige vurderinger som ligger til grunn for utsettingen. I tillegg er det sett på smoltutvandring og hva som påvirker denne i elva. Datagrunnlaget er fra fire år (2020-2023) og er en kombinasjon av data fra NaturRestaurering AS, en tidligere masteroppgave og eget feltarbeid. Innsamling av data ble gjennomført ved elektrisk fiske, PIT-merking av fisk og peiling av PIT-merket fisk. Data fra en permanent PIT-antenne i elva ble brukt for å analysere smoltutvandring. Habitatkartlegging var allerede gjennomført, men ble supplert med eget feltarbeid. Lengde og art ble registrert under el-fiske og aldersklasser (0+, 1+ og > 1+) ble etablert basert på lengdemålinger. Tetthet ble beregnet ved bruk av Zippins utfiskingsmetode. GLM-modeller ble brukt for å beregne sannsynlighet for utvandring. AIC ble brukt for modellseleksjon der påvirkning på tetthet av 0+ ørret, lengde av 0+ ørret og utvandringstidspunkt var responsvariabler. Både tetthetsavhengige og tetthets-uavhengige forklaringsvariabler ble inkludert i modellene. ANOVA ble brukt for å teste signifikans. Habitatkvaliteten ble vurdert som «god» eller «svært god» for alle stasjoner. Den totale tettheten av laks var høyere på alle stasjonene der laks og ørret sameksisterte. Tetthet av 0+ laks hadde en negativ effekt på tetthet av 0+ ørret som ble forsterket av økende vannføring. Tetthet av 1+ laks påvirker lengden til 0+ ørret negativt sammen med høy vannføring. I 2023 ble det fanget færre fisk, noe som kan skyldes flom forårsaket av ekstremværet «Hans». Flommen, samt generelt lave fangster av ørret, kan ha påvirket resultatet. Resultatene indikerer likevel en høy interspesifikk konkurranse og at habitatforholdene i elva favoriserer laksen. Det var 25 laks som vandret ut og 3 av disse var satt ut ovenfor anadrom barriere. Sannsynligheten for utvandring ble påvirket av nedbør og temperatur. Utsetting av laksefisk oppstrøms anadrom barriere kan ha styrket laksepopulasjonen i Oslofjorden, men har også negative effekter på de(n) stasjonære ørretpopulasjonen(e) i Lysakerelva. Naturmangfoldloven krever kunnskapsbaserte beslutninger der også økosystemeffekter skal vurderes. Det fremkommer ikke vurderinger knyttet til hvilke konsekvenser utsetting av laksefisk kan ha på de(n) stasjonære ørretpopulasjonen(e) eller den rødlistede elvemuslingen (Margaritifera margaritifera) i det siste forvaltningsvedtaket. Det er nødvendig med videre undersøkelser for å se på interaksjonen mellom laks og ørret, samt indirekte konsekvenser dette kan ha på elvemusling.

  Samferdselsdepartementet ved Miljøseksjonen har engasjert Multiconsult, Naturrestaurering og Norsk institutt for skog og landskap til å gjennomføre en litteraturstudie av kompensasjon for jordbruks- og naturområder. Kompensasjon i denne sammenheng omfatter ikke økonomisk kompensasjon, men fysisk kompensasjon i form av restaurering, etablering eller sikring av andre arealer som skal erstatte de områder og funksjoner som tapes ved utbyggingsprosjekter. Denne studien oppsummerer metoder og praksis for kompensasjon av dyrket mark og økologisk kompensasjon i utlandet. Siden det finnes svært lite internasjonal erfaring med fysisk kompensasjon av dyrket mark vektlegges også metoder og praksis i utlandet for å unngå omdisponering av jordbruksområder. Metoder og tiltak som antas å ha særlig overføringsverdi til norske forhold er identifisert
